Music Review: Silk Road Jams

In this ninth volume of CD/DVD albums from Smithsonian Folkways and the Aga Khan Trust that focus on music of Central Asia, the founding Mughal court over the lands of now India, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan is remembered through a variety of the region's instruments. The CD begins with a santur solo by Rahul Sharma, son of Shiv Kumar Sharma, who adapted the Persian santur, a hammered dulcimer, to play Hindustani ragas. He is next joined by Homayun Sakhi performing on the Afghan rubab and by Salar Nader, tablist. The earthy baritone rubab and the airy soprano santur are a fine combination of timbre and the new sound is enjoyable. Following this, rubab and zerbaghali goblet tabla drums are joined with Sirjiddin Jurav on dutar and Muborakqadomov on setar to provide a flavor of Afghanistan. Other tracks bring together the Indian tabla with the Uzbek and Tajik tanbur, a thin, long-necked fretted lute. As usual, the album is nicely packaged with a informative booklet; the 20-minute DVD shows the musicians in performance with their own commentary and historic illustrations. Together, this album is a surprisingly good addition to the collection. These musicians echo what was one hallmark of the Silk Road: the meeting and exchange of musicians and the development of instruments and musical traditions.
