Music reviews of Lost and Found

Music Review: my favorite mudvayne album
Rating: 4 Stars

To tell the truth, I wasn't a huge mudvayne fan at first. LD 50 was ok, but it never really grew on me, and although I don't have the full album of The End Of All Things To Come, I have most of the songs on it, and it was ok, but not great. Then a friend lent me Lost and Found to rip on my computer, and I fell in love with it. It is Mudvane's most mainstream album, I think that they were trying to come out with a breakthrough album, like Korn in Follow the Leader. It is usually the third album that determines if a band is going to stick around. The first one is usually a break-through hit, usually driven by a huge single, then the sophmore album usually isn't as good because the band is coping with being stars and doesn't have time to write too many good songs. If the third album is a failure then they usually aren't going to stick around much. There are 4 singles on this album, which is a rarity: Determined, Happy?, Fall into Sleep, and Forget to Remember. I don't think they made TOO big of a hit album (they were never really too popular, but they managed to get gold albums with regularity). Most of the songs on here are very accesible and easy to get into. It also has alot more melody than LD 50, which they started with EOATTC, with World So Cold. I like that, because although I don't mind screaming, I do like to have more melody. Another thing I like about mudvayne, particulary Chad Grey, is that when he screams, it sounds like a roar so it actually sounds like a man is doing it. Mudvayne projects a certain toughness that I admire, so that when they get pissed off it sounds like they could actually kick somebody's ass. Now to the song ratings":

1 Determined: 9/10 At first this was my favorite song on the album, short and sweet and totally in your face. My love for it is mostly gone, but it is still one of the best songs on the album.

2 Pushing Through: 7/10 I have never liked this song and never will. Its repetitive, and although the bass and guitar work on here is great, the vocals aren't good at all.

3 Happy?: 8/10 This is most people's favorite song on the album, but I don't feel that way. I don't find the chorus to be all that catchy, but it has a really interesting guitar intro. I also like the music video for it, its creepy and cool.

4 IMN: 9/10 Like Determined, its totally in your face. Has a weird intro, and the first guitars on it shocked me. The best part of this song for me is when Chad goes: Want to eat a bullet!
He goes on like that for awhile, and at times anyone can relate to it.

5 Fall into Sleep: 8/10 Another single, good not great. Probably the most melodic song on the album. I don't really know what to say about this song.

6 Rain. Sun. Gone: 7/10 In my opinion a very forgettable song. Not bad, but not good enough to hold your attention. The instrumentals on it are great, bass, guitar and drums really come together on this song.

7 Choices: 9/10 I would probably give this song a 10 if it wasn't for the annoying ennie meenie miney moe. It is only in the beginning, but it really gets on your nerves. This song has everything, from yelling to some really great melodic vocals. We don't have a choice, anymore anyway...

8 Forget to Remember: 10/10 Easily the best song on the album. At first I wasn't a huge fan of it, but it has grown on me so much its been one of my favorite songs ever. The chorus is great, but so is the whole song. Another single, too bad it wasn't the first, because it is much better than Happy? in my opinion. It is a short song, clocking in at 3.38, but its perfect because it doesn't overstay its welcome, so when it comes up on your Ipod or Mp3 player you don't want to skip it.

9 TV Radio: 7/10 The album starts to wear down a little after Forget to Remember, but it never gets dull. My problem with this song is its hypocritical. If there was no Tv or Radio they wouldn't have all the money that they have. Another problem I have with this song is America doesn't have too big an obsession with radio, I think they put it on there just because it goes with it, because Chad mostly mentions tv shows like Wife Swap on it. Korn did a much more profane song that was in spirit alot more like this, called Y'all Want a Single, but it was mostly centered towards record companies. Not that different a song from others because a lot of other bands have done songs like it. Great guitar intro however.

10 Just: 7/10 At least the guitars are different on it, but also not that original. Kind of a one-dimensional song.

11 All That You Are: 8/10 Kind of a slower song, almost a power ballad. Decent song, but the album is past its prime already.

12 Pulling the Strings: 8/10 To be honest I don't really know what this song is about, but its good. Perfect closer. Still, most people will be preocupied with the first 8 songs on here, which are almost all great.

In conclusion, its a much more mainstream album, and easily Mudvaynes best and most mature work. They also took off their masks and makeup, kind of like Slipknot, but unlike Slipknot's third and supposedly "mature" work, its actually good. Mature is evolving as artists, having variety on it, and actually being good. After hearing this album I immediately listened to all their other albums and appreciated them that much more. This is how Mudvayne is going to stick around, constantly changing. Every one of their albums was different, and that is how you become great musicians. Look at Korn, they changed with almost every album and they have been around for 12 years. Unfortunately nu metal is dying out, but for some reason I have never considered them that, because their albums were never too self-centered about feelings or complaining. They are basically a better version of Slipknot, with unapolgetic heavy metal.

Overall, 90/100
Definitely Recommended
