Music Review: Mostly good but some major flaws cannot allow me to give this recording five stars

Eberhard W?chter IS, in my opinion, a very good Don Giovanni. Not quite in the same class as greats like Tito Gobbi and Cesare Siepi but an actual midrange baritone for once with an attractive voice and convincing dramatic ability. Luigi Alva is an elegant Don Ottavio, better than most, and Elisabeth Schwarzkopf is perfect as the crazed Donna Elvira. But here are this recording's major flaws:
Giuseppe Taddei. Normally a fine singer, here he puts on one of the most intolerable displays of mannered vocalism I've ever heard, frankly. Lots of silly attempts to nasalize his voice to sound cute and exaggerated barking, hooting, cooing, etc. Leporello is supposed to be funny but not annoying, especially not THIS annoying. I'm surprised Don Giovanni didn't kill him along with the Commendatore.
Joan Sutherland is an adequate yet completely underwhelming Donna Anna. Well-sung but weak and passive; Donna Anna is supposed to sound furious. Listen to Ljuba Welitsch for Furtw?ngler in 1950 or any of the recorded performances of Elisabeth Gr?mmer to hear this role sung properly.
Graziella Sciutti and Piero Cappuccilli are too serious and quite bland as Zerlina and Masetto. Listen to Hilde Gueden and Walter Berry for Krips in 1955 to hear these roles sung interestingly for once. Gueden's Zerlina is simply irresistible, you'll finally understand why Don Giovanni wants her and is willing to risk pissing off Donna Elvira to have her.
Overall, Giulini's conducting is fine and this recording deserves its reputation but several aspects of it are bettered by others, namely the Furtw?ngler and Mitropoulos recordings from the Salzburg Festival and the Krips (for the cast, not the conductor).
