Music Review: Some focus amidst a lot of self-indulgent clutter

Mountain's main assets were the voices of Felix Papalardi and Leslie West along with some great catchy riffs. While both are in evidence on this live album, "Twin Peaks" suffers in hindsight from the same problem that has rendered many classic rock live recordings basically unlistenable decades later - the infuriating habit that so many bands had of turning 5-6 minute studio tracks into half-hour musical masturbation sessions. This is the downside of the copious drug use, particularly psychedelic drug use, that inspired both the creative achievements of the era and the self-indulgent jamming that ate up precious show (and live album) time. I'd much prefer four or five normal-length tracks to a 30-minute version of Nantucket Sleighride.
The problem for a band like Mountain was they did not have the musical chops to make a fifteen-minute solo stay interesting. Heck, I don't even listen to "Spoonful" off of Cream's "Wheels Of Fire" album anymore, and Clapton could play circles around Leslie West. West's "Guitar Solo" sounds like a second or third year guitar student. He toys with good ideas like volume knob swells, but he doesn't execute any of it particularly well. I'm a decent (at best) guitarist, and I can play all of it. That says less about me and more about the lackluster performance that Mountain saw fit to preserve for the ages.
Pared down to a single album's length, this would be a four-star live album, even today. But as it is, it's loaded down with a lot of musical meandering that was no doubt fun at the time, but not worthy of historical note. This one's really only for serious Mountain fans.
