Music Review: New Crue

The album without Tommy Lee. Back in 1999, Tommy Lee announced he was leaving Motley Crue to become a solo artist. He formed the band Methods Of Mayhem and had moderate success. Then he went strictly solo and released Never A Dull Moment (2002). Again, moderate success. While he was gone, Motley Crue recruited a new drummer to take Lee's place, ex-Ozzy Osbourne drummer Randy Castillo. Castillo fit right in, and the Crue recorded a new album, New Tattoo. Released in the summer of 2000, this album was a return to the band's roots - the classic hard rock sound was back. I like to think of this album as sounding like a cross between Too Fast For Love (1981 & 1982), Girls Girls Girls (1987) and Dr. Feelgood (1989).

Now for the highlights of the album. The album begins with one of the best tunes on the album, Hell On High Heels. This song could have easily fit in on the album Girls Girls Girls. It has that attitude. The title track is sort of ballad-like with acoustic guitar. Very catchy tune. The song Dragstrip Superstar just plain rocks and also sounds like it could fit in on Girls Girls Girls. The song She Needs Rock N Roll is one of my favorites. Great guitar, bass and drums. Great lyrics, also. The intermission is awesome as well. A simple song with pretty simple lyrics and pretty simple subject matter. The song Punched In The Teeth By Love would fit right in on the album Too Fast For Love. The song Hollywood Ending is a slower song reminiscent of the Dr. Feelgood album. The last song on the album is a cover of The Tubes' song White Punks On Dope. Very good.

This album is actually one of my favorite Crue albums. There's no Tommy Lee, but Randy Castillo fit right in and did a good job. He unfortunately passed away in 2002. I got to see him in concert with Motley Crue in 1999. I have seen Motley Crue in concert with three different drummers - Tommy Lee, Randy Castillo, and Samantha Maloney from Hole (who filled in for Randy Castillo while he was ill).

I highly recommend this album for all Crue fans.

Forget about everything else Motley Crüe has released in the 1990s--their self-titled 1994 release and its follow-up, Generation Swine, are embarrassments. Instead, wrap your ears around New Tattoo. This is what this band has always been all about: riffs, hooks, sass, raunch, and hair. Except for the fact that they're older and have replaced Tommy Lee with Randy Castillo, going by the band photos in the CD booklet, this could be 1989. True, the Crüe also seem to have gained at least a little wisdom--the prostitute in "Hell on High Heels" has HIV, fame clearly has its downside in "Fake," and instead of indulging in "Girls, Girls, Girls," the boys have evidently discovered the joys of safe cyber-sex in "Porno Star." On the other hand, the title track is a love song; they evidently miss the old days so much that they're willing to go to outer space for the chance to have that much fun again ("1st Band on the Moon"); and their romances are as problematic as ever ("Hollywood Ending," "Punched in the Teeth by Love"). With New Tattoo, the Crüe have recaptured the essence of what made them superstars. Whether that'll happen again is open to question, but it's still a good argument for sticking to what you're good at. --Genevieve Williams
