Music Review: One of his best...

This is one of his best works, it seems many dismiss it because it's not particularly pop-driven. It is what Morrissey is generally defined as, i.e. a morose, plodding collection of songs. Even the feeling and tone in the voice is tight and restrained reflecting the heaviness of the music versus his recent few albums, as well as the cover being a restrained shot of him behind shades with a somewhat sullen nondescript backdrop. The b-sides are some of the best ever with "Lost" and "The Edges Are No Longer Parallel" cutting to bone. The title track ("When the gulf between all the things I need and the things I receive is an ancient ocean, wide, wild, lost, uncrossed") and Trouble Loves Me ("Then at midnight I can't get you out of my head, a disenchanted taste, still running 'round, a disenchanted taste, still running 'round") being two of his finest moments. Wide to Receive ("I don't get along with myself, and I"m not too keen on anyone else") and He Cried express the languid, sullen sense of a man that finds life unrewarding and emotionally hard to maneuver.
However the listing says 4 new songs but the listing is the same as original line up of songs with no new additions. Hmm?
The only drawbacks are Papa Jack, why on earth keep it on this new remastered version? Sorrow Will Come In the End would be kind of interesting if he weren't being serious about it, however it is a direct response to the Mike Joyce v. Morrissey/Marr court case so it comes across as bitter and trite.
Overall, stellar. And when I, too, am sullen and withdrawn this cd is particularly comforting.

Perhaps that's because after 1995's inventive and rockin' Southpaw Grammar, the man has run out of steam--an idea underlined by the ho-hum lead track, "Alma Matters."
