Music Review: Incredible music from a genius composer

Claudio Monteverdi wrote exquisite music for the human voice. Many of his compositions are unsurpassed in beauty and emotion. The madrigals presented here are of that calibre and power. You will be hard pressed to find anything in western music equal to the breathtaking intensity and passion of Parlo Miser O Taccio or the haunting beauty of O Come Se Gentile. These madrigals never fail to bring me to tears. The sound is amazing. Like Bach, this music never gets old.
Claudio Monteverdi had a certain element of genius in his musical creation; these are not your typical early 17th century songs and thankfully, the artists that perform them on this disc do superb justice in all areas. I bought this disc on a whim back in 1990 and I was totally blown away, astonished at the charm and profundity of the composer's ingenuity and the performers' insights. It was money well, well spent.
Even if you've never heard of Monteverdi (or are not very educated in early baroque styles), you need to purchase this disc and bask in the wonderful music offered here. I normally do not write reviews for average classical music performances (and I own many of them); I only write reviews for praiseworthy masterpieces (which this is). If you are expecting the music to resemble your typical sounding Palestrinaesque masses and chanting walls of sound with little or no chromaticism, then think again. Though not as extreme chromatically as Gesualdo, this music is wholly unique, very much fresh and alive, extremely intense and profoundly haunting. A choral master once told me that Monteverdi's music was the most gorgeous music ever written. I had never heard any music by Monteverdi at the time (I was a classical guitar player, and Monteverdi meant nothing to me). It wasn't till a few years later when I discovered what the man meant. Wow, was he ever right!
Go ahead and see for yourself. It's really unfortunate that C. Monteverdi is basically unknown by today's music generation (ouside of choral students and early music buffs). Everyone is blown away by track 4 on disc one and track 4 on disc two. Even folks that say they don't like classical must music sit and listen, astonished. This is superb music, period.
