Music Review: My New Favorite Monkees Album!

Well, it's a close second to "More of the Monkees," which goes back with me a long time for sentimental reasons. But this record was the last one out of all Monkees albums (Not counting Pool It!) that I hadn't fully absorbed. After review, it's great! There are many memorable tracks with only "star collector" being the resident snoozer on this one. Salesman, The Door into Summer, and Daily Nightly are all excellent Monkees tunes.
I am a firm believer in the power of a physical CD. I love my ipod but it's not attached at the hip. Also, there is something more going on with a CD and it's packaging: Liner notes, booklet, original artwork and album front AND backs, Photo credits, song credits, "also featuring's" ... I'm into all of it. This is truly missed in the download age of today. LPs, CDs, and even some cassettes were all good at showcasing info like this in print form ready to read, flip through, and enjoy while listing to the music!
This is a re-re-release from Rhino in 2011 and it comes off pretty well. Great crisp sound and production. Sadly, it's stripped down a bit. Gone are the bonus tracks from the 1994-95 Rhino releases, the photo on the back cover, and I'm sure the liner notes and new interviews are now thinned out or eliminated completely to cut costs. I'm glad they kept the yellow left-side bar (on top of the spine) which also recalls the 94-95 CD releases ... but with just the band logo off to the left and not the other text! Interesting.
When I sort of "rediscovered" the Monkees about three years ago, I recalled getting a few CDs in the mid 90s when the Rhino re-releases came out, so I went shopping for more.... and was shocked that they were already out of print! Just here on Amazon, you can see how much the 94-95 CDs of lesser known Monkees albums are going for! Even the huge 1991 box set available here isn't as expensive as a CD of the 1969-70 albums. Had I only known I'd have bought the entire lot back in 1995! The last three (Instant Replay, The Monkees Present Davy, Mickey, Michael, and Changes) are even harder to find and it doesn't seem like this 2011 re-re-release is going to include those ones which still have plenty of high moments and are not total duds. Hopefully all Monkees CDs will again see the light - we have a great start already with their first four albums in 1966-67.
