Music reviews of The Moon & Antarctica

Music Review: This is why...
Rating: 5 Stars

...I consider Modest Mouse to be one of my favorite bands. While I enjoy their previous work and their latest release 'Good News For People Who Love Bad News', none of those albums can touch 'Moon'.

Near everything works here. For starters, the album is essentially divided into three spectrums, all remarkably providing a distinct and memorable experience in and of themselves. Naturally, then, the three combined make for one of the best albums I've ever had the pleasure of taking part in.

To try and summarize, the three different moods are: 1) quirky; manic; fun 2) brooding; gigantic in scope; ambitious; convincingly existential (and) 3) down-ridden; affecting and sincere; modest and human.

This is a complex album, musically and emotionally, thus I don't think the average person will take a great liking to it. Perhaps the best song on the album, "The Stars are Projectors", is a stunning epic of a vast nature, truly one of the only songs that I could deem "spacey", or mentally and visually resembling some degree of horrifying self-awareness; a view of the galaxy from the eyes of your deepest, fearful-at-the-unknown Self -- I, you, are a tiny ant in relation to the nightmarish amount of space contained in the known universe. Progressive, deft of 'any' cheap trickery, and haunting (attempting to use the word without pretense here), provides an overall experience that most will turn away from immediately, and even many giving it a chance might be overwhelmed by its tenacity.

That said, there are certainly pop-elements to both the other bookended creatures. The first course the album takes is, as stated, goofy, subversive, and honestly crass, but it's quick and melodic, much like 'Good News' would later provide, yet outdoing that album with a more raw sound and earnestness that comes off with added genuity. Despite being my least favorite of the three soundscapes, it's still stupid and giddy, and a tasty treat for the mindful delinquent inside you. So, then, the last third of the album, which peaks with the moving, selfless, compassionate "Lives" and "Life Like Weeds". The lyrics amongst these portions are some of my all time favorites, with deeply emotional music lighting their way: "It's hard to remember, it's hard to remember, we're alive, for the first time; it's hard to remember, it's hard to remember, we're alive, for the last time. It's hard to remember, it's hard to remember, to live, before you die; it's hard to remember, it's hard to remember, that our lives, are such a short time; it's hard to remember, it's hard to remember, when it takes, such a long time." Then, with "Weeds", Isaac Brock screaming "I could have told you all that I love you" has never been more affecting. It's done with such an uncommon lack of manipulation or fake sentimentality, one beings to treasure such an empathetic, real meditation on our potential love of others and our most dearest, heartfelt selves. It's just wonderful, moving music.

'Moon' ends on a questionable note with the rocking "What People are Made Of", and it's probably the least memorable tune on the disc. Initially disappointed that such a personal album ended on its soarest note, I eventually came to realize that there is really no other way for the album to end. After the three acts, finishing up with any particular one would somehow make the overall work less than complete. It's weird, but I really find this to be true, and have garnished a stern, new appreciation for the song and it's placement on the disc.

'The Moon and Antarctica' graciously earns its place within my top ten very favorite albums.
