Is it Trance? No. Is it Techno? No. Is it House? No. Is it even Electronica? No. So what is it? I have no idea. It is truly sad to watch one of the original gods of electronica fall to such...trash. The CD is simply a pop CD for the masses. Nothing more. It is 18 tracks of piano, slow beats and 70s "wawaah" guitars. There is no life in this ablum. Now I know why he was jumping on the cover; he is smashing his soul to please the masses. I suppose to the average person this Muzak-esque mix might not be all that bad. But to those of us who embraced Moby when he was new, and understand Electronica, it is a dark betrayal that really deserves nothing, much less the multi-millions of dollars that he has earned through copywriting and album sales. It is, in all honesty, one of the most successful albums of all time. But does that make it a good CD? No. That makes it Pop. On a brighter note, the song "Natural Blues" is extremely well done. And "Why does my hear feel so bad?" can be also passed as music. But you can get a Katcha remix of "Natural Blues" on the Gatecrasher Global Sound System CD that is much faster and club worthy. ATB also has a remix of "Why does my heart..." on the Ibiza '99 CD that is better than the original. Both remixes have more life, more beat and more energy than this entire CD. So why bother picking this one up? If you are looking for good Electronica, go somewhere else. If you are looking for pop, you've come to the right place. Sadly, the true Moby that we know and loved is dead.

Music Review: Quality marred by too much inconsistency Rating: 3 Stars
Well you know Moby is doing something right, since this CD from 1999 is on all kinds of best-of lists, even making #20 of Rolling Stones's best albums of the 90's (not that the mag has any musical relevance anymore). Maybe it's because Moby puts a face to the often anonymous genre of electronica. Maybe it's because he's American, and his music is more easily understood by mainstream critics than, say, trance or techno. Or perhaps it's because he took a simple concept- melding old blues samples with a fresh paint of electronic music, and made a series of inspiring, sometimes beautiful songs. "Honey," "Find my baby," "Why does my heart feel so bad," "Run on," and especially "Natural Blues" are proof of that. But that's only about a third of the 18 tracks on this album, and they all must stand judgement. And this is where the CD falls flat. You get a selection of tracks where Moby does the singing or speaking, "South side," "If things were perfect," "The sky is broken," and "Porcelain," and with the exception of the latter none have music good enough to carry his thin, high-pitched voice. Filling out the disc, (besides "Bodyrock," the catchiest piece, with guitar and a sample of Love Rap) are a series of short instrumental fillers "7" and "Down Slow," and simple acoustic/ambient pieces (the last three tracks). These won't be the tracks you remember. There are some excellent discs here, but they're within the first 11 of 18 songs. If you don't mind skipping around you'll enjoy this but it doesn't reward a complete listen.
Music Review: A VERY TOUCHING ALBUM Rating: 5 Stars
Moby's "Play" is an hour of raw, honest emotion. This 1999 album may have been a big pop hit due the fact that Moby liscened all the songs to commericals and films, excessive media coverage, and of course, his duet with Gwen Stefani,"South Side" BUT over all that is a very spritual and emotional album that you wouldn't except from such a frumpy looking guy(lol). Many of the tracks use samples from archival blues and gospel records under hypnotic dance tracks suppiled by Moby himself and it just plain moves you! This is the type of album that you can just play and sit down and listen to beginning and end and you'll feel like you've went on a journey of some sort.Really. "Honey",the soaring "Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad"(one of the most beautiful songs I've heard in recent memory),"Porcelian", "Machete",the ubiqtious "Bodyrock"...you name it,every emotion is displaced in the songs. I've never heard a mainstream(well, the mainstream came to it) album with such crystal clear emotion. Wheter you want to grieve over something or clean your house, Moby's "Play" is the album for you.Let me just close by saying that there's a song on here for every ocassion. ....And how can I forget about "Natrual Blues".Oh,man...That song is so beautiful! The video with Christina Ricci(directed by zany photographer David LaChapelle) is so touching and Moby's sweeping performance of the song along with Jill Scott and avant garde performance act Blue Man Group was equally moving...Oh,sorry for adding all that but I just had to include that.
Music Review: A masterpiece. That's all I can say. Rating: 5 Stars
Oh, I only wish I could give this CD 10 stars! I personally feel that Moby is a genius. So many of the songs on the Play CD seem to "speak" to me deeply and express my innermost feelings. Each song is different from the one before it, and there isn't a single one I don't like, which is very rare for me! "Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad?" is simply perfect - it's the kind of song where, if you've had a terrible day, you can flop down on the couch, turn off all the lights, and listen to it, and when it's over you feel as though your own heart has been cleansed and refreshed. Fans of the show "The X-Files" might be interested to know that the last two tracks, "The Sky is Broken" and "My Weakness," have both been used in X-Files episodes. "The Sky.." was featured in the episode that Gillian Anderson wrote and directed, and "My Weakness" was used in the scene where Mulder was reunited with the spirit of his sister Samantha. Both these tracks are fantastic! "The Sky..." is incredibly soothing and relaxing. As for "My Weakness," there are simply no words. I think it is the most incredible song I have ever heard - the emotions it is capable of stirring up are incredible. Every time I hear it, I like it more and more. You have to hear it to believe it. In my mind, the whole CD is worth it just for "My Weakness!" But if you're looking for an emotional, versatile CD that you'll be listening to for years to come, this one is for you!
