Music Review: Religious Christmas Chorus Spectacular

From 1958, this album by perhaps one of the greatest if not the greatest choruses ever, is a christmas essential if you want a powerful religious christmas chorus sound.
While the chorus sticks to seemingly generic singing sound/style without changes throughout (with a few exceptions) and it's mostly done without music or very little, this actually makes this christmas album distinct from so many others. MITCH MILLER'S other christmas album, HOLIDAY SING-ALONG WITH MITCH (which I actually even like more than this one despite how much I like this one) also kept to the same generic singing sound/style as presented here (though in it's own form with backing music and a non-religious/secular and more upbeat sound throughout).
To me, this almost generic singing from one song to the other is what helps make both of MITCH MILLER'S christmas albums be so great and unique. And even though it's done in a generic style as mentioned, MITCH MILLER AND THE GANG do it so much more powerful than any 'bargain bin' generic christmas chorus cd. This generic sound also allows one to get into the style that is presented here and stay with it throughout so that if you like the first song, you should like all the other songs.
There is not a weak song on this cd release of the album and so IT CAME UPON A MIDNIGHT CLEAR, JOY TOT HE WORLD, DECK THE HALLS, and SILENT NIGHT (SILENT NIGHT having a decent amount of music backing) are all great christmas songs that one should enjoy over the christmas season.
So great is this that it should appeal to both adults and kids and should make for some wonderful background christmas music fo the christmas season. Very recommended.

A family tree-trimming classic if ever there was one, this collection by chorale leader Mitch Miller is timeless--and (relatively) schmaltz-free! On Christmas Sing-Along, Mitch & the Gang stick primarily to the religious aspects of the holiday, with traditional favorites like "Joy to the World," "What Child Is This," and "We Three Kings." There is, however, a rousing version of "Deck the Halls," but if you're looking for more commercially oriented tunes like "Must Be Santa," you'll have to check out Mitch's other holiday collections (including Holiday Sing-Along). As with most of Miller's work, the songs are led by a particularly loud baritone. Blame it on the mix, but rarely a tenor is heard. (Or a soprano or alto, for that matter.) While the tone for most of the selections is rather reverent, this is a festive collection nonetheless. --Steve Gdula
