Music Review: Crying-in-your-beer honky tonk

MISS Leslie (Leslie Anne Sloan) is the real deal when it come to crying-in-your-beer, honky-tonk heartache. The singer-songwriter - she has written all but one of the 14 tracks here - and fiddle player sings it straight from the heart in the tradition of Patsy Cline, Loretta Lyne and Connie Smith, but with contemporary ideas and values.
The subject matter is centered around the life-blood of country music - relationships, with themes of love, loss, hurt, joy and salvation, and, of course, drinking and bars. The women in these songs are not lost and broken souls without their men; Miss Leslie's women are forceful and independent. As she pens in the sleeve notes, the songs "come from that very feminine struggle of living in a patriarchal society".
This is honest, gritty stuff, delivered as lean, twangy, hardwood-floor honky tonk. And Miss Leslie serves it up with top-shelf back-up from her real-life partner, Ricky Davis, on pedal steel, former Commander Cody sidekick Bill Kirchen on Telecaster and Jason Allen singing harmony.
