Music Review: Misfitaholics Anonymous

I discovered the Misfits after I had burned out on Metallica's first four albums. I saw the members of Metallica wearing Misfits T-shirts all the time and they covered the songs "Last Caress" and "Green Hell," which were some of the best songs I had ever heard. So I decided to listen to the Misfits and to my surprise, they sounded nothing like Metallica. They were better.

"20 Eyes" immediately blast the album wide open and sucks the breath right out of you. "I Turned Into a Martian" is impossible not to sing along with. "All Hell Breaks Loose" is absolutely brutal and menacing, making you wonder if the Misfits are serious about the violence they sing about. "Vampira" is so catchy it will be stuck in your head for months. "Nike a Go Go" builds up and then releases at the end in a very pleasurable fashion. "Hatebreeders" is one of the Misfits greatest songs ever that takes you on a ride to annihilation.
One of the things that makes this album so unique is how they put a live song, "Mommy Can I Go Out and Kill Tonight," right in the middle of the album. It's the fastest song on the album and when they let the feedback ring at the end, then tear into "London Dungeon," it will make you drop to the ground. "Night of the Living Dead" comes in buzz sawing and then flows like blood. "Skulls" could almost be described as beautiful, disturbing, and funny all at once. Glenn Danzig's voice is at it's best on this song. "Violent World" is a musical slashing and bounces at the same time. "Devils Whorehouse" grinds and whips in a filthy way.
"Astro Zombies" is the greatest Misfits song of all time. The guitars punch, the drums pound, and Danzig's voice brings the '50's sound in perfectly. It's amazing how the song flows. "All I wanna do is exterminate the whole human race," is the greatest line ever sung in the history of music. "Braineaters" ends the album on very fun note that leaves the album echoing in your head and you may find yourself chanting "Oi! Oi! Oi!" long after it's over.

"Walk Among Us" has everything a great album needs: strength, energy, emotion, humor, and great lines. That's one of the reasons why 22 years later, "Walk Among Us" is still the greatest album ever recorded.
