Music Review: The inspiration for punk to be harder and for metal to be heavier.

The year was 1983. Punk and metal were two styles that were still emerging from their rock roots and despite the similarities, usually drew in two different sounds at the time. Punk was fast and furious, but the songs typically had more of an upbeat feel to it as opposed to venturing into dark, violent territory. Metal at the time was starting to show signs of going into heavier territory, but a lot of the music at that time had more of a grandiose, larger-than-life feel to it as opposed to being truly heavy.
Around this time, The Misfits had been in existence for nearly six turbulent years where the group changed plenty of members and were looking to embark on their third and final style of sound (the first sound of the band was crooning rock/punk music; the second being standard punk rock.) Earth A.D. came out unlike any of the previous Misfits releases. The musical tone of the album was far, far more violent than albums past. The beats were fast, the guitars were crushing, and the lyrical content was more graphic in terms of violence than the previous albums.
Perhaps this was due to the band starting to head toward breakup, perhaps Danzig was bored with what was going on. Regardless, this album was put out and despite the members' dissatisfaction with the production, the overall speed, power, and grit on this album provided a sufficient wake-up call to the punk and metal genres to step it up a bit. While hardcore punk became more solidified as a result of this album, this album's influence on metal was both large and undeniable. Soon after the release of this album, the genres of thrash metal and crossover thrash began to flourish and many metal artists (Metallica especially) began to take influence from the bands musical style while many metalheads began to abandon the "glam" look often associated with their genre and started to look "more brutal."
I regard this album as essential for all metal/hardcore punk musicians and highly recommend it for fans of those genres.
