Music Review: MINNIE Lives Forever!

Natalie Cole seems to have gotten all the credit for having recorded a few duets with her father (posthumously), Nat King Cole, however, it was Minnie Riperton with whom this mighty act was first accomplished. This album was recorded in 1979 and released in 1980, a year after she had succumbed to breast cancer (R.I.P.) and was recorded in the same way; all of Minnie's duet partners were dubbed onto the original song(s.) The only song here that is strictly Minnie w/o a partner is the agonzing, misplaced "Strange Affair." I absolutely cannot STAND this song. It just doesn't fit the overall theme of love-based album (no offense intended.) Capitol might have saved it for the vault. Anyway, minus this abysmal song, there are six remaining beautiful pieces of music which the original queen of the whistle register has bequeathed to her adoring fans. "Here We Go" with Peabo Bryson & Roberta Flack is a masterpiece. "I'm in Love Again" with Michael Jackson is absolute confection. "Island in the Sun" brings to mind "Midnight at the Oasis" by Maria Muldar with its tropical undercurrent, "Give Me Time" makes me wanna cry everytime I hear it because it is so representative of the great loss we continue to endure without her because it so perfectly sums up the beauty and potency of her life, her music and her spirit, "Take My Breath Away" with George Benson features some very soulful and kitteny vocal interplay between the guitar legend and Minnie and closing out the album, we have "The Song of Life," a cute little ditty shared with Patrice Rushen, the legendary pianist/composer/arranger; this one also shares a similarity with "Island in the Sun." There'll never be another Minnie and she reminds us daily that like herself, music and love live forever, indeed.

2007 UK reissue of this seven track album from the unique Soul/Pop vocalist best known for her hit 'Lovin' You'.. This posthumous album was originally released in 1980, the year after her death at the age of 31, and saw the musicians with whom she collaborated with on her debut solo album add their musical embellishment to Minnie's recordings after her death. Includes additional vocals from R&B/Pop vocalists Roberta Flack and Peabo Bryson plus a guest appearance from Stevie Wonder, who adds a wonderful harmonica solo to 'Give Me Time'.
