Music Review: Favorite Artist! Favorite Christmas CD!

Since I am late to a review of this CD, I won't offer an actual review, but rather will add my opinion to the others already offered. I purchased this CD a week after it was available so I have had two seasons to listen to it. I really liked it last year, but after constant play this season, I am ready to say that this is one of the best Christmas CDs I own. I am completely charmed by Mindy's voice and songwriting. Her voice has a beautiful, fragile and familiar quality to it that perfectly complements her original songs and the covers she has chosen here. I especially love her blend of song styles, so that I am never bored listening to Mindy's work. I admire Mindy's confidence in mixing songs about her faith with more secular material. "Follow the Shepherd Home" is a special favorite that I play year-round. I agree with another reviewer on this site that "Santa will find you" will become a classic as a wider audience discovers this wonderful song. Her covers of more classic holiday songs are rendered beautifully here, most especially "What are you doing New Year's Eve" and her duet with Alison Krause on "Away in a Manger."
I read with amusement the occasional reviews that shortchange her talent by observing that Mindy Smith is not another Patti Griffin or Gillian Welch. To my mind, that's like complaining that spring ephemerals aren't really beautiful or necessary flowers because they aren't roses or lilies. While I love the music of Patti, Gillian, Lucinda, EmmyLou, Alison and many others, Mindy Smith can stand right along side them, for the beauty she adds with her lovely voice and songcraft.
Description of My Holiday
Recorded in Nashville and produced by Mindy Smith and Steve Buckingham, My Holiday is an 11 song collection that features six original tunes written and co-written by Mindy including Come Around , Santa Will Find You , Follow The Shepherd Home and the title track. My Holiday also features such classic Christmas recordings as Away In A Manger with Alison Krauss on harmony vocals, The Christmas Song , Silver Bells and I ll Be Home For ChristmasThe young country chanteuse offers a homespun holiday on a collection that mixes acoustic intimacy with supper-club sophistication. Though the title track isn't likely to rank with the standards, other originals, such as "Santa Will Find You" and the testament of faith, "Follow the Shepherd Home," rank with Smith's best. Acoustic guitar gives way to jazzier arrangements as she addresses standards, such as "The Christmas Song" and "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve," while steel guitar highlights "Silver Bells." "I'll Be Home for Christmas" has more of a rock rhythm than usual, and the closing "Come Around" sounds Beatlesque in its guitar and harmonies. "Away in a Manger" benefits from Smith's vocal blend with Alison Krauss, with Thad Cockrell contributing a duet vocal on "I Know the Reason." Like chestnuts roasting on an open fire, there's a breathy warmth to Smith's vocals throughout. --Don McLeese
