Music Review: Essential Historical Recording

I can understand how someone would be disappointed listening to this cd if they thought they were going to hear Miles and Getz playing together. I don't think that ever happened. The meat of this cd are the George Russel compositions: Odjenar, Ezzthetic, Hibeck and Yesterdays. The harmonies are unusual, a bit jarring at first. But once they get established in your musical sensibility, they take off like a rocket and are a source of delight. They've been some of my favorites for decades. The cd is worth having just for those four tunes. The other pieces are just bonus material, in my opinion, but excellent material as well. These are the finest examples of Russell's work to be found, and Konitz and Davis and all the other musicians involved bring to the music the inspired playing necessary to make it all really swing. A must have.
