Music Review: Na na na na naa na naaa na na na naaaaa....

I just like Birbiglia, I do. When he's on stage doing his thing, he really comes off as a genuinely nice guy who appreciates his audience and is thankful for being blessed with what he does. He's good at what he does, he's very funny ... and it is in this album that you see this really come out.
Make no mistake, this is very funny material but there is a bit more of a sense of intimacy between the performer and the audience. Without ever becoming schmaltzy, there is a warmth in this performance, the kind of stuff that comes out when you share your personal stories which Mike has done superbly well. I absolutely laughed myself stupid as I was driving from Hershey to Lancaster and MY WIFE WAS LAUGHING TOO!! That doesn't happen much.
I gotta hand it to Mike Birbiglia. His comedy is largely without the really acidic cynicism that most stand up comedians tend to go to. DO NOT GET ME WRONG, there is a place for that. Often I'm perfectly happy to hear Daniel Tosh's scathing tongue or Lewis Black rant, nothing wrong with that. But Birbiglia comes from a different place ... without trying to be utterly non-threatening. He's not making effort to be clean. He's not out to be family friendly. This is simply the material that flowed forth when he shares some of his life with us. And I believe we all owe thanks to him for giving us some really wonderful and funny material.
