Music Review: The Wildest. And yet . . .

Baker is a phenomenal guitar player, and a decisive influence on the development of rock and roll. There are also some truly first-rate tracks on this compilation. So why only three stars (three and a half, really)? I can't help but think the compilation will be of primarily of historical interest -- of interest, that is to say, to guitarists or to people with a serious interest in mapping the early history of rock & roll. The reason: no matter how biting the guitar playing may be, many of the songs operate securely in a traditional idiom (the world 40s/50s R&B) and just aren't as original or exciting as what you'll find in the best work of Bo Diddley or Chuck Berry, or for that matter Link Wray or Lonnie Mack. This isn't Baker's fault: he was, after all, a sideman on the bulk of these recordings. But precisely because of that, the compilation lacks the stamp of personality and the uniqueness of vision that one will find in the best work of many other performers. So by all means, pick this up. But don't expect it'll change your life.
