Music Review: Papa Nez Has Got The Stuff!

It's 1979 and Michael Nesmith lays 'Infinate Rider On The Big Dogma' on us.His wit and musical dexterity is completely intact but rather then clone the country-rock of his earlier albums Nez lays down a series of tunes that showcase a polished,modern sound embracing styles from pop,disco,funk grooves and just plain ol' rock n' roll. "Dance" says it all for this album-a high key fusion of disco-rock married to yet another one of Nez's witty little tales."Magic" finds him singing in his wistfull falsetto to a sweet little tune with a lighhearted varriation on Bruce Springsteen's wall-of-sound/frat rock sound.'Flying" again finds him going for a frantic disco-rock sound and he sings it like it were his last days on Earth!."Carioca" strikes a chord on the love song end of things with a nice creamy sound. Of course my favorite (and many othes) is "Cruisin'"-one of Nez's funniest stories married to a sweet funky groove and that bass line that leaves you crying for more;it makes one want him to keep up the tale of "lucy and Ramona and Sunset Sam" forever!Nesmith goes right into a back-to-basics rock sound on "Factions" before going into a more reflective place on the quiet "Light" which features Tom Saviano's ear catching sax solo.The disco-rock (emphasize ROCK) really shows up in full force on "Horse Race". But....we're not done yet.Nesmith closes this recording with a big musical surprise with the bump-inducing jazz-funk of "Capsule".Now THIS song is a groove-the best part of this tune is Lenny Castro's outer-space synth washing over the start of the track,not to mention John Hobb's incredible bassline;this is the type of song you would actually expect from people like George Duke,George Benson,Steely Dan,The Doobie Brothers and of course Tower Of Power.Nesmith's half sung-half rapped vocals really set this oh-so California groove into the right place and the images the lyrical imagry is right on time! Taken together this album truely has something for everyone-a little pop,a little fusion,a hefty helping of soulful funkiness and a lot of chunky rock 'n roll. Why Nesmith didn't have an enormous musical future after this album,after hearing it is utterly beyond me-the versitility,wit and savvy of his musical vision is incredible not to mention his musical ability was well established before this came out. Maybe it was his grandma's invention of liquid paper or the seemingly inability to shake the bubblegum past of his days in The Monkees that contributed to that. But whatever the case 'Infinate Rider On The Big Dogma' is not only a must for Nesmith fans but not a bad first place to start getting into his sound. Yet another in a huge handful of musical directions by many musicians that went unexplored.
