Music Review: A Creative Peak for Michael Jackson

It's hard for me to believe that it has been more than 20 years since this album was first released. I remember when MTV made such a big deal when the "Thriller" video was first shown, playing it to what was then and may still be the biggest audience MTV has ever had. The hype was incredible, with a "making of" video and interviews with Michael Jackson, dancers, and Vincent Price.
"Thriller" continues to fight for the title of the biggest selling CD of all time with the Eagles' first volume of greatest hits. While the musical influence of "Thriller" has been significantly less than that of many other works, it remains an excellent collection of pop music and marks the peak of Michael Jackson's career.
When I reviewed "Welcome to My Nightmare" by Alice Cooper, I stated that anything with Vincent Price in it is likely to be good. The title track fits that statement perfectly. Vincent Price is superb, with an incomparable laugh to help finish his monologue. Vincent Price has such a wonderful voice for speaking roles such as the one in "Thriller." The title track is a wonderful, almost campy song. The horns and beat were perfect, middle-of-the-road pop. While the song is campy, the mildly dark elements helped mark a transition in Michael's music to darker, angrier themes.
Another song which has some of these same dark elements is "Beat It." The video highlighted well that this song was a theme song for the pent up emotions and frustrations of teenagers everywhere. A fast song with a theme that would readily fit into a modern version of "West Side Story," the elements of this song made this song one of Michael's angriest songs of the time and hinted at things to come.
As if "Thriller" and "Beat It" were preludes, the third song with dark elements in it is "Billie Jean." While the song has an easy beat and relatively simple musical elements, the words are dark. Billie Jean is telling Michael that he is the father of her baby. Michael denies that he is the father, and further says that it was just a fling, but mostly to himself; he's not talking directly to her. This song is a sobering song given that most of the remaining songs on this CD are love songs.
Most of the other songs on this CD deal with women and relationships. Most were classics the instant they went onto this CD, some more so than others. The duet with Paul McCartney, "The Girl is Mine," was recorded when Michael and Paul were the best of friends.
The electronic instrumentation and the complex vocals of "Human Nature" were musical high points in the 80s that few others were able to approach much less match. "P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)" is a musically simpler song, bordering on bubble gum, but Michael Jackson was unstoppable at this point, and the song has such a good beat that it's hard to ignore. "Wanna Be Startin' Something'" also received a lot of airplay back in the 80s.
Many albums re-released on CD add all sorts of extras to add value to the CD. In many cases the extra material works. There are several versions of this CD that add a lot of extra material. However, the extra material on those versions distract from the artistic achievement of "Thriller." This CD is one of the few pre-CD era albums where the album itself was so good and sufficient that extras are unnecessary.
"Thriller" is unassailable. Even if you are usually not a Michael Jackson fan, you can appreciate the art of this music from an incredibly creative period for Michael. "Thriller" is the only Michael Jackson CD I own, and I do not play it often, but when I do, I fall into the incredible talent Michael has, and remember an era that seems to be receding all too quickly into my past.
