Music Review: A more mature MJ, but no less amazing

I grew up with Michael Jackson...we're the same age...and in my youth he was no more than a pop singer in a family of brothers, whom I naively dubbed "the Black version of the Osmond Brothers." I was a little girl, and that was my youthful, innocent, and very ignorant observation. I now know that Jackson's talent is so much more than what could be compared to any other human being this side of the universe when it comes to pop culture.
That being said, I only came to realize this, sadly, because he is gone and I started listening like crazy to his CD's trying to see what all the fuss was about in the aftermath of his death.
HIStory is my third purchased CD so far, and the first disc is a compilation of hits from his first years--the tunes that put him on the map of modern pop music forever and ever.
Disc II, however, is what enthralls me. Granted, I made a habit of skipping over the tunes I found less-than-interesting, like "Childhood" and the "Earth Song, and "Smile." I have a bit of an aversion to MJ's sickly sappy songs, something he is real good at in most of his CD's. Despite my efforts to ignore those songs, I got to like them as well. In this CD, Michael Jackson is no longer "Bad," but takes some time (lots of time) to tell us he's MAD and also quite sad. I think it was a great move at the time to go a different route and use Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis as producers, giving his collaboration with Quincy Jones a bit of a rest. His music here is raw, throbbing, super bumping and terrific on the up tunes. His singing goes from raucous and angry to super-sticky sweet, almost maudlin.
All in all, you may not love Michael Jackson in this CD, because this aint "Bille Jean" anymore. But you will definitely find him pretty darn real.

HIStory's 2 CDs (one hits, the other new) were Jackson's attempt to connect his glorious past to a dodgy present and--given it's commercial and artistic performance--cast a shadow on his future. Conceived as his formal coronation as the "King of Pop," HIStory's second disc instead presents Jackson as an epauletted, single-gloved Richard III. By turns paranoid, angry, bitter, sentimental, and, in one instance, possibly anti-Semitic, HIStory was less a collection of songs than a case history. A few tracks--mostly those produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis--are sleek, modern pop/soul, but too much of HIStory has the overblown vacuousness of a musician who knows his time is past, but is unsure as to how to react to the situation. --Steven Mirkin
