Music Review: There's A Ghost On MJ's Dancefloor

For the record this was an album I found out by total accident. During the time this came out I was far more involved in the music of Funkadelic and Prince to even notice this album came out,on my 17'th birthday no less. I saw that the video for the title song of this album was featured on an episode of Friday Night (Videos) and even when I saw the CD in the store I gave it the slip.Crass as this sounds...I only purchased and got into this album after Mike's passing. As it turns out,at the time it came out I should've been paying a lot more attention. Considering the way Mike's life progressed in the decade after this came out the lyrics and music on the five new songs presented here are very prophetic. There's something dark and almost toxic underneath it all,sometimes bubbling to the surface. Even the party funk of the title song and "Superfly Sister",both with a heavy 90's dancefloor friendly tone have a dark tone. Wheras the previous album HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I showcased Mike in a rather paranoid and angry state of mind this found the same character frightened and uncertain. No song here presents that better than "Morphine" which,as we all know now is basically an account of his burgeoning drug addiction as,over a musical bed blending heavy industrial noise-funk with an almost sweet Broadway style refrain he sings of his love/hate relationship with Demoral,alternately embracing it and hiding from the consequences it's baught into his real life. "Ghosts" is a song that yes has some similarities to "Thriller" but there is little sense of the blithe energy of that one as the tone is far more fearful overall and the music has that same 90's pop/funk flavor with more of a hard techno/new jack styled beat. "Is It Scary" is an appropriate way to end the cycle of new material as a musing on fear.Considering this is a subject matter Mike had been exploring as far back as the late 70's you can easily see how these kinds of tunes were coming. The remixes here also raise some interesting points about his music."Scream Louder" uses a Sly Stone vamp to give an overall heavy funk flavor to the original and it fits like a charm. The Refugee Camp mix of "2 Bad" also shows a strong allience to 70's funk."Money",done originally as stripped down hip-hop mixes it up with heavier electric piano and a heavily jazz groove. Most of the other remixes aren't atypical of the hi NRG techno style of remixology of the day and hearing the brooding "Stranger in Moscow" and "Earth Song" redone with heavy dance beats. That should've totally defeated the original purpose of those songs but it had the effected of successfully changing them and adding a sense of irony between the music and the feeling of the melody and lyrics. "You Are Not Alone" sounds less like the Babyface cloning of the original's production and more like a dancey gospel number. In terms of "History itself" the dance rhythms take any possible syrupy aspects of the original and gives it a bit more bite. True I'd personally have rather had a more funk influenced remix but what was done did succeed. This is very much an album about contrasts between different musical shades,flavors and emotions. It does take a little more time to get into than most of the other albums the "King of Pop" ever layed down. But those who do give it the time it deserves will find a compelling,passionate if not always a poppy sounding musical journey.
