Music reviews of Russian Futurism, Vol. 4: Mikhail F. Gnesin

Music Review: Gnesin's style is not quite conventional, even if it is not remotely futurist
Rating: 3 Stars

Mikhail Gnesin (1883-1957) was something of an institution in Russian music, but his compositions are rarely heard and as such this issue is very welcome. This disc was originally part of a boxed set labeled "Russian futurism", yet there are preciously few traces of futurism in Gnesin's music. That is not to deny something of an individual voice - there are traces of impressionism here and not a few more modern elements. More obviously, the music is strongly influenced by Jewish folk music and does, in short, not sound very much like the music of any of his contemporaries I am familiar with.

On the other hand, none of it is particularly memorable. D'Après Shelley - Symphonic fragment is an introverted piece of mood music; somber and reflective and darkly lyrical but somewhat meandering (mostly because the thematic material is relatively undistinguished than because of any structural deficiencies). The Requiem is a heavily emotional piano quintet lasting some twelve minutes, and is overall more compelling if not making any lasting impression either. The piano trio, on the other hand, is something of a find - not great music, but genuinely touching, achingly nostalgic with a certain crystalline, brittle sheen to it.

The Songs of a Knight Errant constitute a harp quintet, and a somewhat weirdly impressionistic one - while containing some fine, sparse textures it seems to move absolutely nowhere. The same applies to the brooding sextet Adigeya. Lastly, Jewish Orchestra at the Ball at Nothingtown is a suite of seven very short movements that are strangely attractive and atmospheric in a very Slavic, klezmer inspired manner. Overall the performances are more than serviceable if sometimes a little rough. In short, this is a modestly interesting disc of rather personal-sounding, hard to define (or pidgeonhole), somewhat late-romantic music. Whether it really adds up to much is a different question, but at least the piano trio and the Jewish Orchestra at the Ball at Nothingtown are worth getting to know.
