Music Review: The best Christmas CD I own. Michael Crawford truly captures the Christmas spirit on this wonderful album.

What more is there say? "A Christmas Album" is probably the loveliest, most moving collection of Christmas songs ever put together, and if you aren't a fan of Mr. Crawford before you listen to this album, I guarantee you will be afterward.
Michael is absolutely wonderful throughout the whole album. His voice is just so magical and inspiring, so perfectly suited to singing Christmas carols, it's like listening to an angel! I love the warmth and feeling he brings to each track. It never seems like he's just singing. You can really hear how deep the emotion is coming from. He performs each song with an honest reverence, as if it really means something, instead of being just words and notes of music on paper. His joy and exuberance is infectious, and brings something of an English choirboy charm and energy to every piece.
Unlike most Christmas albums produced by today's artists, this album actually captures the true meaning of Christmas instead of exploiting the holiday's consumer potential. While there are a few modern songs here, "A Strange Way To Save the World", "Candlelight Carol", "Mary, Did You Know?", and snippets from "The Most Wonderful Time of The Year" (the better parts, mind you), and "The Very Best Time Of Year", Crawford manages to make them all sound classic and timeless, a very rare ability, yet a very essential one, I feel, for this particular type of production.
One thing I really like about him is that he doesn't try to stretch far out of his element by performing songs that aren't suited to his voice. He stays away from the kitschy and too-often-heard songs, like "The Christmas Song", "Do You Hear What I Hear", or "Jingle Bells". Instead, he focuses on the ones we ought to be listening to more often, and brings to light many that most of us are probably unfamiliar with. I have to admit that I had never heard of about 75% of these before buying this CD. Now they all have become well-loved favorites, worthy of being played every year, as much as a classic like "White Christmas".
Each and every selection is bright, joyous, and exuberant, and ranges from the oldest and most beloved carols to ones written within the last several decades. With lovely orchestrations, angelic choirs, and breathtaking solo performances by Crawford himself, it's hard not to get swept up in the celebration of Jesus' birth. There is such a good variety of songs that everyone in my family, including myself, has a favorite. I salute him for helping to make a family closer during the holidays, something that is always good. I especially liked his inclusion of the children's solos and choirs, particularly in "Peace, Peace/Silent Night," and "O Holy Night". He always sounds so nice singing alongside children. I am glad he chose to do so again for this album.
I had been a big fan of Josh Groban's recording of "O Holy Night" for years, but after hearing Mr. Crawford's incomparable version, I'll never go back to Groban again. Michael just soars through each passage, and his vocal strength and power is really quite astonishing at times. His voice is strong when it needs to be, but he never pushes it over the top. He still he allows his lighter, gentler notes to expound just as effectively. He probably comes closest to his operatic range in this one, but does so with such ease and grace that the effort goes unnoticed by the listener, yet the product shines through in the most affectionate and glorious rendition of one of the best Christmas songs ever written. I absolutely adore Michael's performance, and yet to have heard anyone else perform it better, in any language.
I honestly had never liked the song "Mary, Did You Know?", until I heard Michael singing it; now it reads like a true Christmas song, and doesn't feel dated at all. "The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year" was another song that got on my nerves, but the skillful way in which he blends it with "The Best Time of the Year" redeemed it, and made for a nice opening track on the album.
The lush orchestrations and beautiful background choirs make "A Christmas Album" stand out from all the rest, and with an amazing talent like Michael's helming it, there is no way it possibly could have been any better. I've bought many to give out as gifts both this Christmas and last, and everyone who has received one has had nothing but good things to say about it. As for my own personal view, I would have to say that such would be my verdict also! For anyone looking for a more traditional Christmas album, this is a great purchase. If you're only going to buy one album this year to help you get in the Christmas spirit, than this is it!
