Music Reviews of Michael Buble

Music Review: Ignore the hype - focus on the music.
Rating: 4 Stars

There are tonnes upon tonnes of reviews that put Michael Bublé up there with the likes of Sinatra, Darin, Tormé and Martin... but honestly, at this point I can't think of those as anything but misleading. With time, he might indeed rise to their level, but it's just too early to tell. He seems well on his way there, though.

The selection of songs for this album is very good (I only question the inclusion of Queen's "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" as I don't think it fits with the overall vibe), and Bublé's voice shines through it. At some moments I find the production leaning a bit too much towards the cheesy side (the "Francis Albert Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim" album comes to mind), but I already expected that to some extent, the producer being David Foster. I wouldn't mind hearing Bublé with a more stripped-down accompaniment - drums, bass, piano and an occasional guitar. It is, nevertheless, great music. Much better than most of the manufactured pop rubbish that's force-fed to kids nowadays.

Ignore the hype. Get the album, listen to it and draw your own conclusions. This guy's got a great future if he keeps it up.

Music Review: American Idol reference recognizes Bublé's impact on music!!
Rating: 5 Stars

O.K., so I watched the American Idol show where one of the judges (Jackson) mentioned Michael's name. For Michael to now be used as a 'measure' by which others are judged is a credit to the impact Bublé has had on the music scene this past year.
I work in a department store (electronics/music department) and have for the past 6 years so can really see what customers are looking for, and more importantly buying. With little if any promos here in Ontario, Bublé has continued to be a top seller. It is word of mouth that's influencing most buyers decision to purchase this dreamy cd. And word of mouth suggests that his voice and style are only beginning to be discovered. The majority of our customers are professionals in their 40's, but what has been a pleasure to watch is the increase of sales to those teens or early twentysomethings!
Bublé has put out a great offering of songs - and without question the final cut on the cd - That's All - is the all time greatest version ever done!!

So to the reviewer who dismissed Idol's recognition, take it from me, Bublé DESERVES credit for his rich and beautiful sounding songs. Outstanding cd.

Music Review: Good- but only because the song selection is "can't miss"
Rating: 3 Stars

Michale Buble is the 30something guy spotted at every karaoke bar who can sing respectably all the Frank Sinatra/Bobby Darin/Dean Martin material. His voice is decent, but nothing special. Buble's success is a result of promotion and impeccable selection of "can't miss" standards. He really adds nothing in the way of personality or interpretation of the lyric. Much of his phrasing is exactly that of Sinatra and he obviously is trying to sound like ol' Blue Eyes (listen and hear it, "for once in my life I have someone who needs meeeeeee..."), but of course, falls short of the original.

The "cabaret crooner" animal has been relatively extinct from the pop music scene in recent years, and the success of a mildly talented standard singer like Buble is evidence that there is a demand in the market for a return of this timeless music.

The renewed recent interest in the life of the greatest cabaret singer of all time, Bobby Darin, makes you wish someone like him would burst on the scene and electrify us again.

Alas, it appears we'll just have to settle for milktoast Sinatra mimics like Buble in the meantime...

Music Review: Now This is Music!
Rating: 5 Stars

Until yesterday I had never heard of this singer;Michael Buble'.I put on a headset at the mall and was sampling their featured CD's....this being one of many.To say I was blown away doesn't begin to describe my reation to what I was hearing.

I'm a 44 year old who grew up listening to, and truly loves the standards, big band, and 50's and 60's music. I am basically time wharped with my choice of music. The orchestration and arrangements only make this CD better. They already had a great voice to start it all.David Foster turns everything he touches into gold.I had to keep looking at the CD case, because it was hard to believe that someone so young was putting out this amazing sound. Like me, he must have an "old soul".

I have already shared this CD with several of my family and they were truly impressed as well. Try doing that with Hip-Hop and Rap....yeah right. With younger vocalists performing these timeless pieces, this music could last forever, and this is one lady who is extremely greatful.

I look foward to seeing where this young man's career will take home.He has a new fan in New Jersey.....that's for sure!

Music Review: He's got some serious chops
Rating: 4 Stars

Buble sounds like a cross between Frank Sinatra and Mel Torme, and that's a good thing. He favors Sinatra more on the uptempo tunes, and Torme on the ballads, but the end result is very pleasing. While this album is somewhat derivative, that's not surprising for a 25 year old, and it is his first album after all. He's even got the guts to use Sinatra's original arrangements on "For Once in My Life" and "Come Fly With Me" by Don Costa and Billy May, respectively, so it's possible to do a direct comparison with Sinatra. Sinatra kicks the arrangements harder and swings a little more, but then, he was the best singer in the world.

It's also interesting to hear how the more contemporary songs hold up next to standards. Buble hits a home run with "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" and a triple with "Moondance," but "Kissing a Fool" and "Broken Heart" didn't do it for me at all.

I sure would like to hear him do an entire album of standards not associated with Sinatra with a big band arranged by someone like Johnny Mandel. I'm looking forward to see how he develops.
