I'm really going to catch you-know-what for this! I mean, after reading the sterling reviews for Mr. Bubles latest offering I can see that I am, once again, in the minority. But at the risk of alienating an army of Michael Buble's loyal fan base I must say that I am perplexed as to the popularity of " Its Time " and this young singer. But before you hit that " was this review helpful to you " no button please hear me out.
Heres my point...releasing a disc of standards is a double edge sword. On one hand you are releasing a collection of songs that are, for the most part, extremely popular and tunes that everyone enjoys, to one degree or another. So theres a certain comfort in purchasing a disc where you are intimately acquainted with the material. But...comparisons are inevitable as well. In my ever growing music library I literally have dozens of renditions of the songs featured on this disc and by the supreme vocalists of the last century. That being the case having yet another version of " I've Got You Under My Skin " ( Sinatra anyone? ) or " Foggy Day " ( Ella, you are the best! ) is probably something I could do without. Nevertheless, anyone even vaguely familiar with the art of the popular song is aware how these tracks should be performed and while Mr. Buble does an admirable job theres little here that premier vocalists of days yonder would find particularly threatening. Nevertheless, Michael Buble does have a nice enough voice with just enough bass resonance to make these songs interesting but, sadly, that may not be enough. Some songs simply require the singer to have enough life experience in them to relay the each tracks haunting lyrics, therefore assuring the listener that the vocalists understand the songs meaning. And while Michael can most definitley sing I do get the odd sensation that he may not have fully experienced much of what life may teach us to fully comprehend what many of the popular songs are truly telling us. Mr. Bubles mentor seems to be the late, great Bobby Darin and while that is fine in itself there simply isn't enough here to grasp onto, vocally that is, to keep my interest. I know it sounds as though I am damning this artist with faint praise but that's not particularly true.
If this disc holds any real pleasures at all ( and it certainly does! ) it might very well be not necessarily in Mr. Bubles vocals but in each individual tracks sterling arranging/producing. Tommy Li Puma has done a remarkable job in making these cheastnuts sounds fresh and inviting and 'that' has been my greatest enjoyment when placing this on my cd player. Again, Michael is a competant vocalist and certanly knows his way around a song but with arrangments such as these I can't imagine that most singers might come across better then they might with a less talented producer. Mr. Bubles freshman disc with David Foster bears that out admirably! That cd eventually was donated to my local library. Still, as previously stated, there are some nice things here, " The More I See You " is just playful enough to keep it interesting, " Can't Buy Me Love " a big band/swinging arrangment of the Beatles track is fun and swinging to boot! " Quando, Quando " is a misstep that never seems to take off but everything here cannot be as one would like it. But again, the arrangements and the musicianship on this cd is not only wonderful but saves the disc from a certan amount of blase'.
Overall, its a nice enough disc but it sounds as though they were perhaps simply trying to add as many flavors as possible to make it as interesting as they could. The only problem with that of course is that is sounds somewhat contrived and geared more toward marketing then an artist who is attempting to put together the best songs available. Nevertheless, I will award it three and a half stars and look foward to Mr. Bubles next release. Here's hopeing that he leaves the arranging to Mr. Li Puma and continues his on-the-job-training in the art of singing the popular song. I wish him all the very best!

Description of It's TimeMichael Buble, It's Time Michael Bublé's assured debut and the tireless year of globe-trotting touring he spent promoting it elevated the 20-something Vancouver native into the first rank of pop crooner revivalists. His sophomore studio follow-up largely turns on the same formula that helped make his considerable vocal prowess so attractive to mainstream audiences, mixing the nigh flawless, if expected Sinatra-channeling ("I've Got You Under My Skin") with more playful and inviting renditions of pop standards like the Gershwin's "A Foggy Day in London Town," "Feeling Good," "Try A Little Tenderness" and Cole Porter's "I've Got You Under My Skin." But it's the eclectic mix of more contemporary material the singer seasons them with -- apt tribute to Bublé hero Bobby Darin -- that keeps him walking the narrow tightrope between artistic intrigue (a blues-tinged vamp of Holland-Dozier-Holland's "How Sweet It Is," Leon Russell's lovely "Song For You," with a guest turn by Chris Botti) and the kitsch-laden abyss ("Quando, Quando, Quando"'s Euro-centric duet with Nelly Furtado, a ring-a-ding-fling with the Beatles' "Can't Buy Me Love" that echoes fellow Canadian crooner/rival Matt Dusk's more successful flirtation with Lennon-McCartney). Arranger/producer Tommy LiPuma offers Bublé a welcome swinging jazz showcase on "The More I See of You," a bracing respite from the rest of producer David Foster's slick, if typically bloodless MOR production. -- Jerry McCulley [Note: A special edition including two bonus tracks--"Dream a Little Dream" and "Mack the Knife"--is also available.] Michael Bublé and More Michael Bublé | Come Fly with Me | Totally Bublé | Come Fly with Me (DVD) | Two Shots | Peter Cincotti |
