Music reviews of MM..Food? (CD & DVD)

Music Review: Fair Amount of Tasty Stuff in Here
Rating: 3 Stars

MF Doom is far away from any other rapper/genre. He is a completely unique individual with a specific sound. I happen to really dig it so I picked this up as my first MF Doom album. Mind you, it takes time to get used to the production. The beats are very different. At first I felt like I completely failed myself by buying the album, but after a very long time it grew on me and I do want more. If you've listened to DangerDoom, don't imagine this as being in the same franchise. Dangerdoom and MF Doom are completely different animals, this one being the uncaged one. The only issues I have with MM...Food is the overload of skits and clips. I feel like Doom needs to channell his energy and focus on the musical aspect. That being said there are some "songs" on here I really enjoy that I'd like to share with the Amazon community.

"Hoe Cakes", "Potholderz", "One Beer", "Deep Fried Frenz", "Kon Karne", "Kon Queso", "Vomitspit", and "Kookies" are all great songs. "Vomitspit" would be my favorite, and it's probably because its closest in similarity to Dangerdoom. All the other stuff on the album is skits or ignorable songs. I love MF Doom's anti-chorus style. He focuses on making an artwork out of music, instead of taking the commercial approach. All I ask, is for Doom to carry his potential to the next level. Take what he did on Dangerdoom and apply it to his own albums. MF Doom is one of those rappers that you view so much potential in, but they seem to not fufill that potential. All I know, is that MF Doom is going to seriously impress me one day. He managed to do it on Dangerdoom, but on this album I felt like he didn't take in who was listening. While MM...Food has its amazing moments it too much avoids music in general. Doom came close to alienating the good parts of his album by compacting clunky skits in too many places.

Description of MM..Food? (CD & DVD)

Seconds Anyone? After being out of print for close to two years, MM..FOOD? returns with a Bonus DVD with over an hour of live performances and behind the scenes footage. The initial pressing of this reissue also comes in a special limited candy bar chocolate scratch-n-sniff silver mylar package with a bonus poster and sticker to boot.
Doom (aka Zev Love X, Viktor Vaughn, King Geedorah, etc.) has so many alter egos, it's a task just to keep track of his prolific catalog. The shared threads that run through all of his work are his bugged-out lyricism and his eclectic, inspired production motifs. Whether cartoon soundtracks or '80s soul singles or moody jazz melodies, Doom embraces any and all sounds with equal affection. Despite the presence of guests like Count Bass D ("Potholderz"), Madlib ("One Beer"), and the Molemen's PNS ("Kon Queso"), Doom is still the mastermind. This culinary-inspired outing is a loopy food-crazed journey through 15 tracks best described by the last song--"Kookies." It's tempting to call Doom an acquired taste, but for the deep underground heads who treat his rhymes like ciphers to decode, he's anything but. His approach to music-making, seemingly (but hardly) random, packs so much dazzling style and unpredictable flair that the 50th listen can be as enthralling as the first. --Oliver Wang
