Music reviews of Tical 2000 : Judgement Day

Music Review: Great.
Rating: 4 Stars

Method Man's second solo effort Tical 2000, expands wonderfully on the themes that Meth failed to get across in his debut solo album Tical. Tical 2000 is more ambitious, better produced, darker, more emotional, much larger, and overall better than Tical. Method Man also matures musically in this album. Where as in Tical he had serious problems with his rhyming not melding with his beats, in Tical 2000 he shows much more attention to creating solid quality music. His sound is still scratchy and harsh, but his flow is so much smoother on this album. And where as in Tical the sound was just so drab you had difficulty actually listening to Meth, this album will grab your attention, and allow you to take Method Man in, in a more pure state. This album also features a song that is by far the most representive of what exactly the method means in Method Man.

While Tical was painfully small, Tical 2000 is almost painfully large. Even though most of the 28 tracks are skits, there are still too many tracks. Most are filler, but many are quality songs nonetheless. This is easy to forget, as the album acts like a long epic movie.

Method's brilliant rhymes are still here, but he still hasn't found any lyrics that have strong messages. I doubt he ever will. Rather than make meaningful music Method Man tries to express himself through his street poetry. I don't really buy this. I think more so that he likes making rhymes that sound cool first, and rhymes that have relevance second. There are some lines that have some deeper meaning, but as a listener they are much more difficult to understand. Few are as intelligent on the mic as Meth, but many are more powerful on the mic. And this is what Method Man lacks, strong presence. Rappers like Dr. Dre and Notorious B.I.G. have powerful presence on the mic, Method Man doesn't. Instead his talent shows more than his personality. If Method Man's lyrics appear emptier than the others, they do show a skill for artistic manipulation of the English language. Unfortunately this lack of presence limits Method Mans jump into the rap stratosphere.

Method does however create much better music than in his first solo album. Tical 2000's beats are classic Wu-Tang, but the Wu-tang feeling is no doubt missing. There are absolutely no kung fu reference, and no short little kung fu movie snippets. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but these things help much more than they hurt. The Beats are ever changing in this album. There is a good mix of dark sinister beats, slammin dance esque beats, and blatant hardcore tracks. Mostly however the album is very dark and it shows. Method Man displays a scary, brilliant psychotic side to his methods. Because of his heightened dramatics few tracks are trash. The albums peak comes at the end with Method's epic "Judgment Day". This is the track that is vintage Method Man. You get a real feeling of who Method Man is in this song. And the track is very dramatic, lasting a solid 6 minutes, and never misses a beat. "Judgment day" is complemented by a host of awesome tracks like: "Dangerous Grounds", "Perfect World", "Torture", "Retro Godfather", "Step by Step", and "Break ups to Make ups". All these secondary tracks are exceptional, And round out Tical 2000 quite nicely.

No doubt Tical 2000 is leaps and bounds above Tical. It's just a better product and its sound is classic, and definitive. I was very pleased with Tical 2000, where as I was devastatingly disappointed with Tical. His focus was genuinely geared to make solid tracks throughout this journey through Method Mans mind. And with that Tical 2000comes out a better-finished product, flat out.

The Wu-Tang warrior's second solo joint is so conceptually huge, only somebody who's been high every day for a decade could have imagined it: hip-hop album as science-fiction double-feature as celebrity parade as horror movie as multilayered masquerade as an endlessly Baroque flow of spiels and skits, hallucinatory fantasy, and killer-bee menace. The romantic strains of Tical have been replaced by pure, sweaty sex, and Meth's image transformation from laidback muscle to bloodthirsty cyborg (with a phone book's worth of guest stars) just means he compacts his flow more tightly. The production is the Wu standard of berserk little loops and spare boom-bap, though RZA's tracks are head and shoulders above those of his disciples. --Douglas Wolk
