Music reviews of Dethalbum II Deluxe Version (CD + DVD)Music Review: Amazing But Not As Good As The First Rating: 4 Stars
Dethklok's back in full force. It's a grand moment indeed. If you don't know who they are, don't like metal, or haven't seen the show then I have no clue why you're even looking at this page, let alone reading this review.
The review in short, and leading into it: The Dethalbum is not nearly as good as the first but because it's more of a true, straight-forward death album, not because it's just worse. Dethklok really went somewhere with their unique brand of comedy and absurdity in their lyrics with true definite musicianship. But here, such absurdity is minimal. Case in point: Murmaider II is just about as good as the first, but the first had that tone of absurdity in killing mermaids. Here the lyrics depict what happens after in that the killer becomes a god, all-powerful, bow to him, etc. It's more "true death metal" and loses that which made the initial album one-of-a-kind.
The album starts incredibly strong. "Bloodlines" came at an interesting moment in my musical life, because I just began getting into Sepultura and there is a clear homage to them simply in the drumbeat (when I compare it to "Refuse/Resist," a lot of people so far can see what I mean). I liked that and the song itself is just real good. Compared to the rest of the album, it's just as strong as Murmaider was in the original. It immediately sets a high bar for the album.
"The Gears" has a great keyboard effect and a catchy riff/verse hardly found anywhere else on the album. "Burn The Earth" also has a great riff and I found myself liking this one a lot too. It should be worth mentioning at this point that none of the three songs have much of the comedy style at all. It's there a little in the last, but just one line that might go a bit unnoticed. The chorus: "There's nothing to save/You're my slave/Burn the Earth/For minimum wage." Compare this line to a similar one in "Detharmonic": "Because I'd rather you be dead/Than lose a tiny shred/Of what I make this fiscal year/I'd rather you be dead." You're more likely to laugh at the absurdity of the second but the first lacks that punch and gets lost in the death metal madness.
Next is my favorite song on the album. Easily Dethklok's heaviest song (with possible exception the deluxe edition re-recording of Duncan Hills Coffee), "Laser Cannon Deth Sentence" is a death metalhead's dream song. Heavy, blazingly fast, I haven't been able to stop listening to it at all. "Black Fire Upon Us" is basically the spiritual sequel to "Go Into The Water." Thinking a bit more in-depth on it, I wonder if there's coincidence in the using of opposite elements. Used, like "Go Into The Water," in the finale of season 2, it has that same slow yet heavy, moody, and catchy sound that the other did. The wailing guitars will be stuck in your head for a long time.
"Dethsupport" sounds rather repetitive to me. Not bad and it fits the sound of the album but there's better material here. Kind of like "Briefcase Full of Guts" or "Hatredy" (if you got the deluxe edition or the iTunes bonus tracks version), some will love it and others will probably hate it. Personally, it annoys me. "The Cyborg Slayers" makes up for this though. It opens with slow droning guitars and just pounds itself into your ears. Where repetitiveness sounds annoying in "Dethsupport" it sounds awesome and really works here.
Another personal favorite of mine is "I Tamper With The Evidence At The Murder Site Of Odin," and not just because I'm a Norse heathen or because it has an extremely long title. It's got a real catchy sound and the vocals sound more like a true death metal vocalist might. Sure Brendon Small (...or Nathan) has a great death metal sound but...well, it's difficult to describe. I'm sure other death metal lovers will see what I mean. As for "Murmaider II," I already made my comments on it. Great song.
As for the last 3 songs, I personally don't like them as much as I do the rest of the album but I really wasn't a fan of a lot of songs on the first Dethalbum initially ("Face Fisted," "Awaken," "The Lost Vikings") but I love them so please, don't take my word for it: give them a shot, just like the rest of this album.
As stated before, this album is really just as good as the original but just lacks the humorous edge the first one head. It's still a death metal fan's wet dream though.
I purchased the deluxe version here, and am not reviewing the normal one, so I'll post a review on the DVD later once I watch it. I'm expecting 52 minutes of musical greatness though. One random thing about the deluxe edition too: I'm very fond of the packaging and the material. It's thinner overall than a standard jewel case, but it looks better and feels sturdier than your normal digipak.
**An update for the DVD and deluxe package as a whole**
The DVD is, as many will know by now, made up of the videos shown on the projector during the 2008 tour. This is not live footage as was implied in the initial descriptions of the package which plagued the net for months prior to the arrival of the item. Is this good or bad? Depends on your point of view. There is plenty of recycled material here, that's for sure. If you've seen the show versions of Go Into The Water, Briefcase Full of Guts, Awaken (whe whole episode for this one is used for clips), and Duncan Hills Coffee, you'll just get the same experience here. Some, like Birthday Dethday, Dethharmonic and Thunderhorse, are expanded on (the latter reveling in the lack of necessity in censorship), which make for entertaining views. There are some originals like Murmaider, Castratikron, Go Forth And Die, Hatredcopter, and Bloodrocuted (if you never bothered with youtube, the expensive deluxe package of the first album, or the iTunes version, then this will be new to you).
There are also some little comedy bits between certain songs and before the Deththeme there's an intro like the show. It really is more like an at-home concert with about 4-5 bits of sketch comedy in between, feeling like an expanded version of Metalocalypse. I enjoyed it, but it really was good for about one viewing and that's it. Some will agree, some will disagree, and some will say it's outright garbage, but it's your call. And on the matter of the deluxe edition, allow me to echo everyone else: where the hell are my two bonus tracks I paid for?
Overall, though, I'm thoroughly satisfied and can't wait for Season 3 and The Dethalbum III.
Get these songs at least:
- Bloodlines
- Laser Cannon Deth Sentence
- Black Fire Upon Us
- I Tamper With The Evidence At The Murder Site Of Odin
- Murmaider II: The Water God (only if you liked the original since they're incredibly similar)
