Music Review: The 2nd best Metallica experience available...

...the best obviously being seeing them in concert. This boxset really is a dream come true for Metallica fans though. For a great price you're getting 3 live cds and 2 full dvds. All of the stuff here was recorded around 1990 as well, so it's really showcasing the band at their peak. For anyone who's even remotely into Metallica you won't be disappointed by this. The 3 live cds pick the best out of a few nights in Mexico City, and the band run through amazing versions of live favourites Creeping Death and Harvester of Sorrow as well as their biggest hits... One, Enter Sandman, well you can see the tracklisting for yourself. Forget the "overblown theatrics", as another reviewer perfectly put it, of S&M, this is the best document of the band live you'll get. I do have a couple of gripes with the live album, the first is the 20 minute long intermission track on the end of disc 1. This could've been cut out and we could've had a version of Ride the Lightning or Fight Fire With Fire, neither of which are featured anywhere here. This leads to my next gripe, which is the fact that some songs are repeated up to 3 times over the set while some of the prominent songs from their few few albums (up to the Black Album is documented here) are missed out. As I said, Ride the Lightning is the most prominent track to miss out, and there are a few others missing. But instead of dwelling on the negative, I'll mention some of the great things here. The concerts are cleverly edited to make them sound & look like a single one, and all of James' chatting to the crowd is left in which is a great touch. The sound quality is amazing, the band is in fine form and the crowd are damn loud. It'd be worth it for the live album alone. If the cds here were released as a standalone album, it'd be heralded as one of the best live albums of our time.But you're also getting two full concerts on DVD. Make no mistake, they were recorded for video and the quality isn't up to par with the specially filmed for DVD stuff these days, but this is Metallica, in their prime, and over 5 hours worth on DVD and it's damn impressive. For the younger fans or those who haven't seen them live, this is the next best thing. For those who have then this is a great way to re-live the experience of seeing Metallica in concert. It's less than double the price of Cunning Stunts on this site and you're getting so, so much more.
One thing included that I haven't seen mentioned is a 20 minute movie before the concert on dvd-1. There was no support act that night and this is the video the crowd saw to get them going, and it covers the making of the Black Album, shooting videos and just general stuff. You're also getting a couple of stickers and the old booklet is on dvd-2, although it's a bit of a pain browsing through it, I'm sure I will someday.
Simply put, this is an amazing box set. If you're a fan of the band then you owe it to yourself to check it out.
