This overproduced Telarc affair helps explain why the label ultimately died. It's based largely on the Warners charts, and that's where the problems begin. Ray Heindorf was a brilliant orchestrator who did a bang-up job for Busby Berkeley (although it wasn't clear until sixty years after the fact); but later he became addicted to BIG arrangements, piling on the strings, piling on the brass, just plain piling on, an excess that undercuts Willson's simplicity. It might work -- might -- with a distinguished cast, but everyone here is plain white bread; whoever's Prof. Harold Hill sounds more like a singing Abe Lincoln. There are other distractions: the barbershop quartet suffers from an annoying vibrato from deep within, and someone had the brilliant idea of enlisting a college choir for the chorus; the effect is like a balloon after the needle. Erich Kunzel tries, he really tries, and he brings spunk to "Seventy-Six Trombones" only to be defeated by Heindorf's misguided attempt at a medley for the Overture, and that college choir at the end. We do not have a truly definitive recording of this great score because each new version had its own faults, starting with the original Capitol album and its balance problems; but it's still the only album with Robert Preston and Barbara Cook, and it's still the first place to go.
