Music Review: 'GONNA RAISE MY VOICE LIKE THUNDER'

Those words are the first line of the chorus to "the change INSIDE of me" a song about the kind of attitude adjustment the Holy Spirit miraculously performs in us when we truly GIVE OUR LIVES TO CHRIST.
This recording is the middle child of their total of 3 to date. I just got this cd the other day, so it's the last one of theirs I've listened to. It's the more mellower of the three. My first thought was, gosh, what kind of drugs were they doing? Which is a really terrible thought because I'm sure these southern evangelical protestant boys don't do drugs!!! (I don't either, don't recommend it). It begins to pick up after the fourth song. It's actually good that I'm listening to this while driving the streets of Boston, given the well-known, incompetent driving ability of its citizens (myself included)! The first cd I purchased of theirs, I listened to while driving the long, open highways of eastern California driving at high speeds! The funny thing is the only other pictures, besides two group photos, are ones in a parking lot: an empty reserved space, a sign labelled Parking, and a one way street sign! This band hails from Dallas, Texas, a place where I graduated from college in 1986. Do they have parking problems in Dallas too now???
At first, I didn't think I would like this cd hearing the first few songs. I think their best is their last cd, Unbroken, in which I'm having a harder and harder time placing where their concepts come from in scripture. The concepts in all of their songs are just the most basic beliefs of christian theology and express just plain praise, joy, celebration as in the chorus of Come one, Come All: 'Come one, come all to the presence of our God, This is where all hope and peace and joy are found.' The most clever lyrics, are in The Love of God which was written by Frederick Lehman, who wrote this some time early in the last century; it's a celtic tune to be sung at Easter or Communion: 'the love of God is greater far, than tongue or pen can ever tell, it goes beyond the highest star, and reaches to the lowest hell. The guilty pair, bowed down with care, God gave His Son to win.' All the other songs were written by the band and a few others. As I play this cd over and over, I like it more and more and I think that's because, though the lyrics and music may not be the most phenomenal, what Christ did for us on the cross was the most phenomenal event of human history, and what the Holy Spirit reveals to us, those of us who are truly born again, is supernatural. I think that's my attraction to me of christian popular music, when I'm stalled, angry at what the world's lobbed my way, I'm reminded of what God has promised me, what His values are, that He has eternity in store for me, and mercyme does such a great job of expressing our christian faith in their music. That faith is rarely, if ever, expressed in popular music, as the Apostle Paul writes in I Corinthians 2:13, 14 we speak not in the words which man's wisdom teaches, but what the Holy Ghost teaches...But the natural man receives not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness to him: neither can he know them, BECAUSE they are spiritually discerned. My favorite song is Crazy based on Luke 11:15, Isaiah 64:6, I Corinthians 1:17-31: 'how can I find hope in dying with promises unseen, how can I learn Your way is better in everything I'm taught to be? Isn't that crazy?' The chorus goes: 'I HAVE NOT BEEN CALLED TO THE WISDOM OF THIS WORLD, BUT TO A GOD WHO'S CALLING OUT TO ME. AND EVEN THOUGH THE WORLD MAY THINK I'M LOSING TOUCH WITH REALITY, IT WOULD BE CRAZY TO CHOOSE THIS WORLD OVER ETERNITY.'

Brand New (2002) CD from Mercy Me .You spend nearly a decade playing praise and worship songs in churches across the country and then, all of a sudden, one of your songs ("I Can Only Imagine") becomes the Song of the Year, a megahit, and your band is Band of the Year. Everything changes? That's what faces Mercy Me and its sophomore release--Spoken For--coming on the heels of the hottest Christian release (Almost There) in the last year. While you won't find anything quite like "Imagine" on this release, Mercy Me still offers an earnest appeal, with trademark slower tracks like "Spoken For" and "Word of God Speak." Lead man Bart Millard and boys can also rock it up a bit with the opener, "The Change Inside Me," and the U2-ish charging anthem "Go." Ironically enough, this second release may not contain a huge hit, but it's much stronger in all phases compared with the band's inconsistent debut. And rest assured, Mercy Me's emphasis is still on praising God and doing so with excellence and sincerity. --Michael Lyttle
