Music Review: studio recording is not where Ms. Ferrick shines

I've been a fan of Melissa Ferrick for years and years now. I own every album (i even finally got ahold of Made of Honor on iTunes), i've been to several shows. This may be my least favorite of her albums.
The pure and simple fact is that what i like about her music is the simplicity, the emotive presence, the power of her voice and her guitar. In The Eyes of Strangers is the most produced of her albums. It's smooth, clean, and utterly unlike most of her previous work, utterly devoid of the features i most craved.
I got Six for Six before Eyes of Strangers came out, and i love most of the tracks. Rest Now may be my favorite Ferrick song ever. Then i got Eyes of Strangers, my hopes so high, and was... disappointed. The acoustic version of Rest Now on Six for Six is visceral, powerful, you can feel the loss deep into your bones. On Eyes of Strangers, it's just a song. Good lyrics, nice melody, all that, but just a song.
If that's what i wanted, i wouldn't be listening to alt-folk-rockers from Boston, i'd be listening to the radio.
