Music Review: A very "Hot" album, but very inconsistent

I came across this album in a used CD store a few weeks ago and decided to buy it. I had already heard the singles "Tell Me", which I always loved, and "I Want You Back", which I sort of liked. Being an American, I was not exposed to any of the other songs on radio, so I went into this album with an open mind and neutral standpoint.
The album opens strong with a very well-produced single called "Feels So Good", which was produced by the legendary James Harris III and Terry Lewis duo (Janet Jackson, Prince). This is followed by "Tell Me", which many of us are already familiar with. The album started wonderfully with these 2 tracks, but from this point on, the tracks are poorly organized and inconsistent in their styles.
Melanie B is enthusiastic about the tracks, and I have to admit that the music videos for this album were very well produced. I don't believe for one moment that Melanie B was forced to make an R&B album against her will, simply because she was the "black" one. I believe that Melanie B just did exactly what Melanie C did - made an album of a different genre, because that's what she wanted to do.
First let me say that I am very glad Melanie B decided to take on the R&B genre and venture away from the "bubble-gum pop" that we were all used to while Melanie B was in the Spice Girls. However, several of the tracks sound more like R&B demos by young up-and-coming stars, rather than professionally recorded tracks by an already world-famous singer. The basic melodies and beats are catchy, but don't have enough production - this is especially evident in songs that would have otherwise would have been exceptionally good, such as "Pack Your S**t", "Hotter", and "Step Inside".
For the most part, I rather like this album. The only song that I really don't like is "I Believe", which is way too demo-ish. Some of the better tracks include "Lullaby" (except for the cheezy lyrics and overused melody on the line "since the day you were born"), "Feels So Good", "ABC 123", and "Tell Me". Melanie B uses a lot of Caribbean influence in many of the tracks, perhaps inspired by her father's West Indian origins. "Hotter" was originally intended to be released as a single, and it could have had a lot of potential had it been more properly produced. However, "Hotter", like many of the other songs, just sound too "empty". Even the hit single "I Want You Back" is somewhat guilty of lack-of-production.
Most of the Spice Girls fans will buy this CD, love it, misunderstand the sexual lyrics, and tell you something like "It WoOd BeE KoOl If U BuY tHiS cD I <3 ScArY SpIcE, SpIcE gIrLs cOmIn BaK 2007! w00t w00t!". However, I'm going to tell you straight up that you will not like this album if you are expecting a Spice Girls-like bubble-gum pop CD. This album is very urban/R&B sounding and has very little, if any, pop influence. For those who enjoy this type of music, this may be a new undiscovered gem.
