Music reviews of World Needs a Hero

Music Review: If I gave this album a 5-star, I would be misguiding you.
Rating: 4 Stars

If you are a person who wants to get into Megadeth but has little knowledge of the band, here's some history about this album. The World Needs A Hero came right after Megadeth's lowest point "Risk" and directly before the popular album "The System has Failed." Let's say that you've heard the most popular 'Deth songs and liked them, but the first cd by Megadeth that you bought was Risk. If that's the case, then "Hero" is gonna be your favorite cd. However, if you bought all their classics such as RIP, Peace Sells, and Countdown, then this is gonna be lower on your list. My point is that if I gave it a 5-star rating, that would be very misleading. A four-star is a good cd, and that is what "Hero" is. Do not get me wrong; it's got alot of good songs, good riffs, and sweet solos, but it doesn't impress the listener like other great cd's by Megadeth. So overall, it's a solid, good album. My views on it are more than less postive.

Disconnect, Dread and The Fugitive Mind, Return to Hanger, Burning Bridges, Promises, 1000 Times Goodbye: These 6 songs are the best on the cd and are flat out great Megadeth gems. While "Promises" is a slower, more rythymically inclined ballad, it's a really moving, powerful Megadeth song with great vocals and different instruments (i believe a violin and some keyboards) thrown in; it deserves at least an 8.5. Burning Bridges, Dread and The Fugitive Mind, Disconnect, and Return to Hanger are probably the top four on the album. Disconnect has a VERY catchy riff during the verses and a great sing-along chorus. Dread and the Fugitive Mind is just a straight-forward, rocker with an addictive chorus and an awesome start/stop riff during the verses. (Check out the sweet double-bass pattern after the second chorus). Burning Bridges has an interesting, kind of (in my opinion) egyptian-like intro, that turns into a really sweet riff and vocals during the verses. Also has a really catchy chorus. Return to Hanger will take you back to Rust in Peace days as it is a fast, thrash-like, metal rocker that has similiar mucic structure and vocals like Hanger 18 did. Well done solos and fast riffs during the interludes are some of the highlights in this rocker. All four of the hits listed above are all very outstanding, "back in business songs", that are rated at least 9/10! One of the greatist hits off the album, 1000 Times Goodbye, starts off with a really cool riff, followed by thundering drums, that get more and more complex and the riff continues. After the sweet intro, the verse kick in and make for a very enjoyable song. The only thing that is kind of annoying in this song is the dialogue between a random girl and Dave THROUGHOUT the song, not just at one part. It's pretty irritating the first couple of times you listen to it, but if you just learn to listen past the dialoge (as i did) then you can hear the sweet solo that is being played in the background. Besides that little flaw, this boy gets a 9/10. Moto Pycho, The World Needs A Hero, Losing My Senses, When, and Recipe for Hate...Warhorse are the five songs that definetly should not be overlooked, but are not as "up-to-par" as the other Megadeth hits. Moto Pycho is a song that I truly like and think is quite good. It starts off with a sweet riff that turns into cool lyrics during the verses. When I first heard this song, I thought the chorus was irritable, but now that I've listened to it many times, it's quite catchy. Dave's voice is alittle morphed (either that or he's singing different), but it's not all that bad. Still a nice 9/10 for the album, but not good enough to be in the top six. "Hero" isn't a horrible song as many reviewers have oppositely stated. It is quite weak for a title track, but it starts off with a sweet fast riff and really good bass and drums. The verse lyrics are pretty cool, but the thing that kills this song is the little "operator talking to DAve part" right before the also weak chorus. The song picks up however alitle ways through and included are fast rifs and sweet solos. Still, overall the song is a 8/10. Losing My Senses, at first listen, did not appeal to me because the vocals and guitar don't really go together, but now I see that that little "sycopation" is what is interesting about the song. It's got an interesting chorus with sweet overlappeing guitar. However,it's still middle-of-the-line and gets about a 7.5-8/10. Recipe for Hate stars off cool but then the verses are more/less said by Dave rather than sang. The music is cool during the little "story" though. This first part gets about a 7/10. Then Warhorse kicks in, and it gets very good. It's a fast-paced rocker with good guitar, drums and bass. Love the vocals too. This second part gets a 8.5/10. When starts off really strange and sort of creepy, because Dave is just raging (talking, not singing) about being betrayed or somethng along those lines. After a while though, the song gets really sweet, faster, and DAve actually sings. Not a bad closure to the album at all and it deserves at least a 8.5/10. Silent Scorn is a 1:42 instrumental which isn't as impressive as "Into the Lungs of Hell" but it's not horrible. It's got waht sounds like a trumpet or something at the the end which is different. >So with that, you can see that while "Hero" has alot of good points, it also falls flat in many other cases. The songs are definetly a STRONG step in the right direction as far as getting back to the good 'ol thrash days, but they're not quite there yet. All I ask is that you listen to this album with an open mind, finding and listening to the good points rather than focusing on the bad ones, and knowing in your mind that Dave Mustaine and the boys worked hard to reverse their past mistakes with "Risk" in giving us fans a solid, honest-to-God, metal album. However, like other reviewers have said, if you're just getting into Megadeth get a classic, but if you're a diehard fan get this bad-boy.
