Music reviews of Risk

Music Review: Listen at your own "Risk"
Rating: 1 Stars

Ok first off, unlike, I'm guessing, a lot of people rating this album 1 star, I am willing to give it a shot. I pride myself on being able, for the most part, to find at least one song on every album released by a band I like, that I enjoy, and this is no exception, but come on...

Honestly I don't know what to believe, when it comes to this album. I've read quotes where Dave has blamed the producer, and I heard an interview where he blamed Marty. Megadeth was and is always Dave's band, so I find it hard to believe he'd release this unwillingly, and think, just my own opinion, that its failure, and the backlash from fans sparked his statements, and finger pointing. Either way we have for your listening pleasure, I use that term loosely, Megadeth's much maligned 1999 release "Risk".

When listening to this album it's important to note that this is more of a sellout album than any of the loads metallica dropped in the late 90's, and honestly, although those clunkers contained some REALLY bad songs, much worse than anything on here, I'd still take the better songs from those albums over this one. It's also worth noting that being a sellout album, the trends for rock music at the time. Metal was just not allowed on radio, PERIOD. As a rock or metal band you had two choices, if you wanted to be successful, thankfully Dream Theater ignored both of these in their 1999 album "Scenes from a memory,", great album by the way. You could either do soft alternative rock, similar to matchbox 20/third eye blind, hey anyone remember those crappy bands, or you could go industrial and use all sorts of electronic crap effects and techno dance beats, Gravity kills, NIN. And, most bands chose one of these two directions. Smashing pumpkins released a techno album, I've tried desperately to forget, except for a song or two, Foo fighters released a fairly soft album, "There's nothing left to lose. All this to say you can't completely blame Megadeth. All sorts of bands everywhere were selling out. Still as a long time Megadeth fan, for me their sound is one of the key things that define them, as a band. Heck Dave's replaced every member since this release, several times. Seriously he's had at least three drummers, two bas players and three second guitarists, at least. I could be wrong on the numbers, but his later albums have that Megadeth sound. They're still not up to the level of Rust in peace, but they're getting there. And I'm not one of those people stuck in the past, who can't accept a band developing or growing, but growing or evolving is a band taking what they already do and expanding on it, not throwing everything their fans want away for something completely different.

Ok as far as this album itself, they tend to be all over the place, going in BOTH God awful directions I mentioned earlier. You have soft alternative songs like Breadline, and Ecstasy, and industrial garbage like crush em, seriously couldn't write out "them"? I don't have a track listing in front of me, so forgive me if I miss a song or two, but here goes.

Insomnia; 4/10 - This song would be better if they'd come up with better lyrics, especially in the chorus. The melody is ok, but the insomni, omni, omni, omnia, this is VERY cheesy. It's a pretty fast paced, not compared to old Megadeth, industrial rocker, filled with all sorts of electronic noises and an annoying violin that screeches throughout most of the song. It's ok I guess, but definately not a favorite of mine.

Prince of Darkness; 6/10 - This song starts with an annoyingly long intro, with a drum beat, and Dave rambling about being the devil. Seriously, this album's bad enough as it is, just get through it as quickly as possible, and stop wasting our time. Once the song does kick in, it's a mid tempo rocker, with a sort of groove to it. It's got a decent melody, and thankfully I was able to cut the intro, when putting the song onto my computer. There's an annoying violin section in the bridge. Ok now don't get me wrong, when used properly a violin is NOT a bad thing, but using it in this high pitched screeching way they do here is just awful.

Enter the arena or whatever that one's called -infinity/10, simply a bad intro to Crush em; 0/10 - Ok so I should not hear an intro to a Megadeth song, that reminds me of an intro to a Gravity kills song. They released an album called "Perversion" right around this same time too, 98-2000, can't remember, and also a much better album. At least that band is suppose to do industrial rock. Anyways this song has a crappy disco/techno beat, with Dave talking some garbage, and a random guitar lick here and there thrown in. It builds to a little more of a rock sounding chorus, but it's still overly cheesy, with the shouts of "Crush, Crush em?", thrown in there. Seriously just a horrible song.

Breadline; 7/10 = I actually enjoy this song. Granted if it'd been done by the Foo Fighters I'd have liked it better, but whatever. It's a soft alt rock song. It has a groovy beat, when the drums kick in. Still the song's well put together, and there's nothing annoying about it. Wow, sad that a song having nothing annoying makes it the best song so far.

Doctor is calling; 2/10 - Should get a 1, just for the intro of the kid saying "daddy the doctor is calling". Very stupid. This song is filled with all sorts of vocal samples, something that'd plague the next album as well. The verses are alright, and the chorus is ok as well, but the intro, riff included, are awful, and I can't get past the annoying voices thrown about randomly. Awful song.

I'll be there; 2/10 - The vocals are actually alright in this one. The chorus is a bit cheesy, but if the music had been better, it'd be tolerable. The song starts with a weird distorted guitar before quickly jumping into a dance beat, sort of, with a weird keyboard. There's also some soft guitar notes being played during the verses. It gets heavier in the chorus, but heavier for this album still doesn't even come close to Cryptic writings, so it's not saying much.

Wanderlust; 3/10 - I actually like the chorus. The vocals and the music make me think of someone walking into an old saloon in a western looking for a fight, don't know why it makes me think of that, but whatever. Unfortunately the rest of the song sucks. The verses are a drum beat with weird noises and I think a little guitar, it's been a long time, and Dave talking softly. Seriously half the time I couldn't even hear the verses, even when I would listen to this song.

Seven; 5/10 maybe 6 = Well this one sort of rocks a little. It's one of the heavier songs, which is sad. It moves faster than anything else on the album, except for Insomnia. Still the song should have been heavier, and the chorus melody neded some work. I don't know what it is, but it bugs the crap out of me.

Ecstasy; 3/10 - Another groove induced soft song. It has a soft alt rock guitar strumming during the verses, with a groovy drum beat. The chorus bugs me almost as much as Seven's.

Time both the beginning and the end; 8/10 - Ok so every Megadeth album has its classics, and this one manages to have one song I really like, granted it could be better, but whatever. Now why they split these is beyond me, but luckily I have a program which allowed me to merge them, so whenever I listen to it, I hear it as one song. The Beginning is essentially the verses and choruses of the song. The first verse is acoustic guitar drive with Dave singing and I think some drums, but I can't remember right now. I know they kick in during the second verse, which gets annoying because some keyboards kick in and overpower the acoustic guitars. Seriously the song worked a hell of a lot better as an acoustic song, at least this part did, and made it seem less sell outy. But that was maared by the keyboards. Still a nice start to the song. I like the vocals, and the acoustic guitars, when you can hear them. I'm indifferent to the lyrics, but they're not bad, so I can live with them. The end is a heavier part that serves and the bridge and solo. I don't really have a whole lot to say about it, except the first part has nothing after the second chorus, so this ends the song nicely. I recomend merging the two songs, because they should've been from the start, one song.

If you're new to Megadeth, definately DO NOT start here. I'd recomend Rust in Peace or Countdown to Extinction. Youthanasia, Hidden Treasures, and Killing is my business are also good. After you have all the other Megadeth albums you could do what I did, and turn Risk into a second Hidden Treasures. Now granted I have the early albums before they were remastered, so some of these songs are readily availible on regular Megadeth albums, but they weren't for me, because I wasen't rebuying an album.

Here's my track listing
1. New World Order
2. Black Swan
3. Prince of Darkness, with intro edited out
4. Insomnia, eh could actually do without it, but whatever
5. Breadline
6. Sudden Death
7. Seven
8. Strange Ways
9. One Thing, Ok seriously this was a leftover from Cryptic Writings, how didn't they put it on here, or have it on CW instead of mastermind, another awful song, but again, WHATEVER!
10. Crown Of Worms
11. Kill The King, this album DESPERATELY needed this song, but so did the next album
12. Time both songs merged into one kickass closer, well not as kickass as Kill the King.

Now I'd say that's a WAY better album, that could've been released instead, with a couple exceptions of course. I just recently edited the track listing with the discovery of Black Swan and Sudden Death, both good songs.
Overall I recomend downloading Time, Prince of darkness, Breadline, and maybe Insomnia and Seven, and avoid the rest. You can also listen to the whole album on youtube and decide for yourself, but overall I say avoid it.
