Music reviews of Hang Cool Teddy Bear

Music Review: A worthy Meatloaf album entry in the Steinman tradition
Rating: 4 Stars

I am a HUGE Jim Steinman fan from the very beginning... and have practically every work he's done from BAT OUT OF HELL to his own 'Bad for Good' to Bonnie Tyler to Air Supply to Celine Dion! etc (btw... never would have bought Celine Dion if it wasn't Steinman). I also love Meatloaf (and own everything HE has done)... and know and understand that Jim Steinman made Meatloaf.

But it should be noted that the Meat Man also made Jim Steinman!

BAT OUT OF HELL was a masterpiece. The writing and production and musical genius of that band and album will have no comparison. But that certainly DOES NOT mean the other stuff after is not good! In fact, it's quite good!

This new album HANG COOL TEDDY BEAR is easily MUCH better than Bat out of Hell 3 (Monster is Loose)... a colossial disappointment by Meatloaf/Steinman-like standards. The Monster is Loose never flowed as an ALBUM. And I wish Meatloaf would stop borrowing from Steinman's 'Bad for Good' album! The same way he did with Bat out of Hell 2 - Back into Hell.

Personally, I was disappointed when 'BOOH2 - Back into Hell' came out. Not because they weren't great songs, but because I felt cheated. Meatloaf borrowing several songs I already know and love from Steinman's 'Bad for Good'! Leave them alone. Let them be as they are. They were good then. Give me NEW material! Not greatest hits from the past!

And this leads to my point about this new entry.

HANG COOL TEDDY BEAR provides a fresh new perspective, but also brings back the wonderfully 'written' high tempo stuff that reminded me of BAT OUT OF HELL. Again... certainly NOT to compare... but it works! And it works quite well.

It's an ALBUM that flows from song to song. You can play it and enjoyed it from beginning to end.

How can you not appreciate the first four songs of this new album (beginning with a an epic like 'Peace on Earth' and its writing), and finishing with the finale 'Elvis in Vegas'?

Now please know that this is coming from one who is ALWAYS skeptical, when Meatloaf makes an album without Jim Steinman's production or writing.

But this new album has some greatly written songs (a few by T. Driggers - Who is this guy?...a Steinman clone??) 'Peace on Earth' and 'Living on the Outside' is terrific stuff. Meatloaf/Steinman worthy. And the Desmond Child/Bon Jovi finale song (Elvis in Vegas) is outstanding!

Easily, 8 out of 12 songs are vintage great Meatloaf, while all are listenable. Now it loses a little momentum in the middle... and some might think it's because of the writing or the production.

But I think people need to appreciate where Meatloaf is now at this stage of his career. Meatloaf's VOICE is not nearly what it was. For example, the ballad songs in this new album are listenable but forgettable. Meatloaf just can no longer sing monstrious ballads with the melody range he had when he sung 'Heaven Can Wait' and 'For Cryin Out Loud' in BAT OUT OF HELL.

But, the writing and tempo of most of the songs in this new work, FITS Meatloaf and his voice today! I am impressed with that. They worked to his STRENGTHS.

All in all, this is a very WORTHY follow up album that works and is listenable and starts up terrific with 5 excellent songs, dips a little in the middle, but finishes quite strong. And some great musicians come to help out...Brian May, Steve Vai, etc. Worthy listening!

Now before any critics blast any of Meatloaf's stuff because they might think he's nothing without Steinman (and again, I have LOVEED Steinman's music from the very beginning)... they must realize that they are not respecting Meatloaf enough and the help he got to write and produce this new work.

It's not his very best. But it might just be the most FUN listening CD experience since BAT OUT OF HELL! Crank the windows down and sing your heart out. Meat Man seemed to be having a blast making this one.

It is a far cry above a LOT of Meatloaf's work of the past. Easily his best work since BOOH2 - Back into Hell, and it's all fresh new material! And it IS Meatloaf/Steinman worthy.

Give it a try. And for heaven's sake... give it a chance (more than one or two listens - it will grow on you fast). Don't come in closed minded.

This is all coming from a huge Steinman/Meatloaf fan.
