Music Review: Easter Mass at Saint Mark's

Once again, Paul McCreesh and the Gabrieli Consort and Players have captured the spirit and drama an important Venetian celebration. The Venetian Easter Mass is a reconstruction by Mr. McCreesh based on his research of the music that would have been used. As is the case with the religious-civic events of the Venetian Republic the music is rich in variety and underlines the sumptuous occasion for which it was intended. The recording of the Easter Mass compliments the recordings of the Christmas Mass, Coronation and the Vespers by the Gabrieli Consort. There is more polychoral chant in the Easter Mass that is evocative of the solemn religious occasion. The majority of the choral settings are by Orlande de Lassus, a contemporary of Andrea Gabireli, who wrote direct rather than intricate choral settings. Brass ensembles and the organ are used sparingly but there is the impressive Tocada by Cesare Bendenelli for 6 trumpets, three instrumental pieces by Giovanni Gabrieli and short solo organ pieces by Andrea Gabrieli that provide some variety in the music.

This recording is an excellent addition for those listeners interested in Venetian music and chant. For someone new to music of this period and the Gabrieli Consort, I would first recommend the award winning "A Venetian Coronation" as the place to begin.
