Music Review: Like Good Wine, It only gets better With Time

There were two forms of Neo-Soul when then genre emerged in the late 90's, although one can debate wether it's really one genre in the first place. However, There is one that stays faithful to it's roots and tries to revive it's past glory days of 60's soul with D'Angelo and Erykah Badu as pioneers is one and another direction that pays more attention to arrangements and moods and feels more sophisticated and lush, still classic soul influenced though. That is what Maxwell is doing, a little simular to Sade but much less commercial and in general more inspired by 60's and 70's soul then she ever was, but they have the same producer nonetheless (Stuart Matthewman. Maxwell, born (Maxwell Rivera) debuted in 1996 with "Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite" a revolutionary album for the Neo-Soul movement that was nothing short of stunning and short after Maxwell was a superstar. 2 years later he followed up with "Embrya" which didn't sell as well but with some time you'll understand that it's almost equally good and you'll apreciate it for what it is. The main themes here are love, spirituality and rebirth and Maxwell's lyrics are good as always, but what I love most with this gem is it's sophisticated arrangements that may need a few listens but you'll eventually get hooked. Most songs are sensual love songs, 2 are instrumentals but 1 or 2 are also midtempo with some funky instruments. Although Maxwell is as ambitious as ever, He's perhaps too ambitious and it will almost feel pretentious at times where Maxwell relies too much on the music and too little on his voice (which is excellent). At times Maxwell sound and feels alot like Terrence Trent D'Arby, very artistic, mature and full of interesting ideas that no one else would dare trying, but not realistic in it's aproach since it sometimes alienate the listener and the music is somewhat unpenetratable for newcombers. But fans of his debut will most certainly like this album aswell, and for certain events this album is perfect. Personally this is my all time favorite Neo-Soul album and it's just gets better with time.
All songs are double titled which is very original, he seems to merge Spirituality with sensuality. And like I previously said, the song themes are ambitious when Maxwell deals with everything from Marriage, (Matrimony: Maybe You) Love (Luxury: Cococure) Spirituality (Gravity: Pushing the Pull) and Re-birth (I'm You: You Are Me and We Are You (Pt. Me and You). It's an mysterious album just like Maxwell charachter is, but The more you listen to this album the more small details you'll discover in the arrangements and the more you'll apreciate Maxwell artistic aproach to Soul music, but it's not an easy album to get into unless you're fammiliar with Neo-Soul, let alone Maxwell. Give it some time, just like good wine it gets better with time, and in this case repeated listens.
A happy note for Maxwell fans is that he's working on a new album, that will probably be released sometime during this year, It will be his first in 6 years!.

The bass line of the opening track is the first sign, and the smooth funk of the second track confirms it: On Embrya, Maxwell has done it again. Sophomore efforts don't always fare well, especially when an artist is still riding high on the accolades of a debut, but Maxwell has managed to take the exquisite soul of 1996's Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite and, without sacrificing any of its verve, turn it into something far more sophisticated. Not only is Embrya a sublime summer soundtrack, it's a groove masterpiece from start to finish. "Luxury: Cococure," the first single, like "'Til the Cops Come Knockin'" before it, is only the slightest taste of the treasures waiting to be devoured. If you're looking for lush ballads, skip to "Matrimony: Maybe You," the haunting "Know These Things: Shouldn't You," and the sensual slow jam "Gravity: Pushing to Pull" (and yes, nearly all the tracks are subtitled like this). They may not be as yearning as those that detailed his weekend-long tryst on Hang Suite (Maxwell knows better than anyone just how far a little restraint can go), but these tracks are gifts on their own. Put them together and you have an album that does nothing but elevate Maxwell's impeccable reputation as the man who breathed life back into the soul of R&B. --Rebecca Wallwork
