Music Review: Dense and unapproachable music in admirable performances

Reger's organ music is admittedly something of an acquired taste, and the music on this seventh volume in Naxos's fine, ongoing series is far from easily approachable (one suspects that these are the kinds of works from which the image of Reger's music as slightly indigestible, heavily contrapuntal and rather dense stems). Still, when looking through the slightly densely clouded surface, there is no doubt about Reger's superb craftsmanship and level of invention, or the absorbing, shifting polyphonic textures that exploits the range of the organ as far as one can take it. The massive symphonic fantasia and fugue from 1901 is technically almost unplayable and passionately dramatic, dissonant and complex. I am not sure I would recommend it to those who haven't already made peace with Reger's music in general, but it is in the end a relatively rewarding work.

The Seven Pieces from 1915-16 - among Reger's last works - are even more dense and difficult. Mostly subdued and reflective, the various pieces employ several famous choral tunes in rather diffuse and solemn arrangements, framed by a dark and murky Trauerode and a desperately oppressive Siegesfeier. Music hardly gets more unapproachable than this, however, and I am personally not yet sure that the rewards are worth the efforts required. Edgar Krapp strikes me as an excellent advocate, especially in the Symphonic Fantasia and Fugue, but I am less sure that the recording achieves an ideal balance - the Seven Pieces in particular seem bass heavy, often drowning out the melody (but I cannot shake off the suspicion that this might have been Reger's intention from the beginning). In sum, while there are rewards to be had from the music here, I am far from sure I can award this release with a general recommendation. Approach with caution.
