Music Review: A really wonderful release

Bruch's "other" works for violin and orchestra are currently rather well served on disc, and deservedly so - while none of them quite challenges the famous first concerto for sparkle and easy flow of compelling melodies, all the works here are at least very attractive and well worth getting to know. Importantly, Salvatore Accardo is a violinist of the first rank and plays with a warmly shimmering tone, beautiful phrasing and impeccable technique - even his rendition of the first concerto must rank among the very best on disc, and he is excellently accompanied by the sensitive, rich and full-bodied tone of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra under Kurt Masur. The sound quality is spacious and well-defined as well. The drawback of this set, if there is one, must be that it fails to include all of Bruch's works for violin and orchestra, such as the Romanze op.42, the Adagio appassionato op.57, the In Memoriam op.65 and the Konzertstück op. 84. The reason is obvious, however - the two discs here clicks in at 78:46 and 78:26, respectively, so there would hardly have been room for another work (besides, these works appear on the companion disc containing Bruch's symphonies).
Some words on the less familiar pieces are in order, I guess (the first concerto and the gorgeous Scottish Fantasy are sufficiently well-known to most readers I suspect). The second concerto is darker and more dramatically intense than the first. It contains some stirring details and interesting orchestration, but is on the whole less compelling than its predecessor - the melodic material is, while interesting enough, never on the level of no.1. The third is richly lyrical with a wonderful first movement (containing some fabulous writing for the soloist) and a hugely attractive tarantella finale; only the middle movement is a little heavy going. The Serenade op.75 is, at 40 minutes in duration, the most extensive work here, but is hardly as formally concentrated as the concertos. It is another melodically compelling work, the material is only intermittently in danger of outstaying its welcome. All in all, though, this is an excellent set that should appeal to any lover of romantic music; strongly recommended.
