Music Review: The wow factor here is the recorded sound

I almost never place sound ahead of performance, but in this case DG has provided so much clarity and inner detail that one of Ravel's main strengths, his orchestration, is brought out with incredible vividness. My collection of Ravel isn't extensive -- in adept hands, his music more or less plays itself, so once you've heard a handful of satisfying condcutors (among them Monteux, Boulez, Abbado, Ansermet, Dutoit, Karajan, and Ozawa), there are no great, unexplored depths.

Yet I would acquire this CD, or the bargain two-fer that is more comprehensive, simply to demonstrate the sound on a good audiophile system. DG in the late Seventies and Eighties really got the best out of Symphony Hall. The elegance of the BSO's playing may no longer makr them as particuarly French the way they were under Munch, but no other American orchestra comes close in my experience. As far as interpretation goes, Ozawa is a bit faceless, but he keeps tempos moving and the orchestration bold-sounding.
