Music Review: Five stars and a must have CD for supporters of Irish Traditional Music

Failte! (Greetings) Irish traditional music for hundreds of years has been an integral part of pub culture. To be precise, "craic" (pronounced as "crack") or the spirited friendly and fun community feeling at such pub gatherings of friends and family. This is a gem of an album that captures at least the audio of an active traditional pub in the 1970's with master flute player Matt Molloy and friends from his musical career with the Bothy Band and Chieftains. This CD's greatest charm is the craic. Unfortunately most people now hear the music recorded in the studio and extracted from its natural "craic" environment.
It is recorded mostly non stop and catches all of the conversations, musicians planning spontaneously what their next song will be, practical jokes (a dramatic guitar intro then a very loud dramatic sneeze), and mugs being filled with Guinness). The last track on the album is everyone at that right level of Guinness singing, playing and step dancing.
If you like this album you might also like the Cheiftain's DVD, "Water from the Well." There are several songs recorded more recently with a room full of musicians at Matt Molloy's pub in Galway, County Mayo. All of the Chieftains are there, including the late Derek Bell (harp), the now retired Martin Faye and Sean Keane (both fiddle, and Kevin Coneff (bodhran). This includes one of my favorites "Dusty Miller." If you are interested in other pub DVD's, try Dervish's "Mid Summer Night's Session" and a mid 1990's DVD "Live at Johnny Fox's."
As this is now a rare album to find, and perhaps consideration is needed to convert at least some of the tracks to MP3 download format.
