Music reviews of No Said Date (Bonus Dvd)

Music Review: "LORD WHEN YOU DROPPIN' NO SAID DATE"
Rating: 5 Stars

ok i got a story to tell behind the legacy and hype behind masta killa's well anticipated critically acclaimed smash hit "no said date". the 1st story involves the when i went and got it on june 1st 2004 which it was postponed from may 4th. it was a tuesday to be exact and me and a few other cats was at the music stor in the mall all waiting on them put no said date on the shelf but they didnt despite them saying i was the most demanded album since the 50 cent craze (painful to say nonetheless that people demand wack cds from wack rappers like 50 cent). so one of the employees calls her boss and asks can they put them out after she brings them from the back and were talking 2 handfuls you know and her boss gives her the go ahead. so she hands them out to us and we knew we didnt have to hear it because its masta killa he doesnt say too many wack rhymes. the guy that worked in the store was praising god because he finally had a chance to get away from a 50 cent cd sale and all them other crossover rappers when no said date hit stores and i saw him 5 months later on black friday and he said we still selling them strong. so i asked him "so you think he went platinum huh?" he said yeah i most definitely think so. they way he was talking im convinced as well although magazine reviews say otherwise but thats why the charts and magazines really dont mean anything in my opinion. dev 1 aka devin horwitz in an interview a few months back told [...] that no said date was nature sounds highest selling album even after 2 years. now to me thats impressive for any label indie or commercial that has to be a record. that tells you that people fiend for his style and thru the internet craze and bootlegging and burning thats still impressive. also around that time an espn analyst yes espn analyst scott van pelt is a big wu fan and was talking on espn sports radio about the masta killa album and saying he couldnt wait to get off work to cop it. from then on there we he's been labeled the coolest cat on espn haha. the end results he's a platinum seller based on this amazing story i told and the hype surrounding despite having no tv promos or radio promos. i think in my opinion this album is a groundbreaker much like 36 chambers, it takes a nation, criminal minded and many others. this is a groundbreaker for the indie culture because after the release alot of artists from years past start droppin' lps left and right and followed the lead and formula of no said date from a timeframe perspective. people like r.a. the rugged man,(which mk had a guest appearance on) immortal technique etc.

1. intro=10 (check out how they mixed the 5 deadly venoms voices if you seen the movie and knowing there was no beat in the background and knowing the order of the dialogue it was pretty dope.)

2. grab the mic=10 (now this is not 1 of my favorite songs but it def. deserves a 10 because masta killa shows he can freak it with his laidback demeanor and showing off his commercial elligence people may think he doesnt have.)

3. no said date=10 (those of you who have this album know whats up with this cut, this sets the tone for the rest of the album. its fast, you can bop your head to it and maybe even dance to it if you have rhythm)

4. last drink=9 (now if you think youve heard masta killa go hard on the title track he definitely spits some raw darts on this old school kung fu beat mixed with the soundbytes mathematics gave him. it ends with a suprising twist with a portion of the "cheers theme".)

5. love spell=8 (now masta killa has 2 love cuts on this album this one isnt the better one but this great to bop your head slowly to rap to but i love the bass and the guitars in this though)

6. the future (skit)=9 (now these are the wu kids spitting on this and you know what its actually quite entertaining and enjoyable considering the fact that they arent on the level on there fathers but the 5 deadly venoms beat makes it work. this features masta's son and gza's son and i think prodigal sunn's son too)

7. d.t.d. (do the dance)=10 (now anybody that listens to old school music knows this otis redding's song thru and thru but mathematics revamps the beat and speeds it up a little bit sort of a remastered version with hip hop lyrics and masta, rae and ghost all rip it esp. ghost)

8. whatever=10 (this also isnt one of my favs but it deserves a 10 like grab the mic beucase the beat makes you feel like you alive and the lyrics are both enjoyable but yet gritty.)

9. secret rivals=10 (now i dont care what nobody says this is 1 song i can listen to anytime despite this might not be the best beat to get you hype but its definitely flowable and the way the rhythm pattern goes. true master is exactly what is name is a "true master" he had meth, killah priest, and masta on this which is a lethal combo indeed showing you dont need flavorful beats to get the crowd loving it.)

10. skit=8 (you can tell that this recorded from a vhs tape and the message is a typical kung fu message with old shaw brothers music but its forgiveable)

11. digi warfare=10 (now this is the 1st new school modern day break dancers theme with the old school elements and the flow is perfect for lets say 1982 which he wanted to take it back to the essence and that he does i only wish this song was like a minute longer.)

12. old man=10 (of course this deserves a 10 when you have a sample of the "sanford and son them" and with laidback crisp lyrics and a chorus that makes you get up an groove well but the video is better in my opinion but all real hip hop heads will love it.)

13. queen=10 (true master does it again this time with a love cut sounding so smooth and slow and lets masta do his thing at hos own pace and this one also offers 3 verses but its better overall lyrically than love spell)

14. school=10 (oh man this is taking it back with the good times soundbyte and masta killa getting on the most dramatic part of the beat and rza speeds it up when he gets on just a one of kind classic at anytime and then masta back on the speed up beat and ends with tupac spreading love to the wu.)

15. silverbacks=10 (this is why true master is my favorite besides rza out of the whole wu elements producing team he gives us a track we can flow too. if you are kid under 18 knowing the lyrics to thios song you wont get in trouble cuz theres barely any cussing in it and your parents might flow with you on this one and true's guitar riffs make us rejoice in good music.masta, gza, and deck all have solid verses we can easily remember.)

16. masta killa=9 (what better way to end your lp with a track named after yourself but this track should be unforgettable for the simple fact that 1: it has bruce lee soundbytes, 2: the beat is an old school chinese martial arts beat, 3: masta killa sends a message. its a banger but too short thats why i gave it a 9.)

end results: its a classic and a masterpiece and hands down one of the best lps youll hear for a while. anybody that objects and sweat this albums techniques is sadly mistaken and his probably a 50 cent, nelly, ludacris, eminem, etc. fan so pay no attention them types. this album is not for the average and below average listener like them fans i just named. go cop it for real hip hop's sake.
