Music Review: Songs Sound the Same-Album Still Ok

After MaryMary's first album, I was expecting an album that totally blew me away. I mean I played the first CD with heavy rotation for at least a year and a half. The thing about sophomore projects is that it is hard to follow an initial project that garners as much accolades as MaryMary's did, without copying the same formula. Afer the first listen, I was not interested in even borrowing this album. However, after repeated listens I do like some of the material. That's a far cry from the last album, when I bought it after listening to a few songs. This album truly did not live up to it's billing in my opinion. Many of the songs sound the same, as it relates to the music. They also used the same watered-down tracks that many of today's secular artists use. No wonder...Warren Campbell is married to one of them and the Darkchild is also producing on this one. Is it just me or does all the Darkchild's production sound the same. I know he's written for many artists, but most of the music he produces sounds the same. I know he and Warren Campbell are super-producers, but sometimes when you get to that status there is a tendency to forsake what's fresh and new for what is popular. Recycling R&B and Hip-Hop tracks for more airplay is popular and it's killing me. It's my prayer that MaryMary use new producers on their next project, because it doesn't seem like the current ones can come up with new music. I mean is it good to listen to? Yes. Is it good to dance to? Yes. Does most of the uptempo tracks sound the same? Yes Does it do anything for me beyond this? No; Overall, I give this album a B-, because I expected better. Maybe next time they should spend more time working on musical tracks, so that it will sound new and refreshing, not old and recycled. Younger audiences probably don't care. It just sounds good to them- and most of it does. I think MaryMary deserved better than this on their sophomore project. They deserve fresh new music to lay the foundation for their fresh new lyrics, which are great by the way- many of the songs are well written. Shame on you Warren and Rodney for bringing these reused tracks and not trying to be creative in your approach to this album! In spite of all of this you should still check out "Ordinary People", which is phat by the way. I actually love that track and I play it quite frequently. You should also check out their song with Fred Hammond, "This Love". Their rendition of "Thank You" was pretty nice too. "I Try" is a really nice song also. The rest of the songs are alright, but again they sound the same and they sound like they used the same music from the last project. I can see that I am not alone on this one. Those of you who love the last album- which I'm sure is many- will either love this album or get bored with it really quickly. The key question is do you or do you not want to hear the same music you heard on their last project? Finally, I will say that this album, with its tight thumping beats, is good to listen to riding home. If you need something that will lead you into worship, buy Ted & Sheri along with this album. And the chorus of "In the Morning" is a particularly striking example of lyric and melody perfectly matched--the key change at phrase's end is a stroke of brilliance.
