Music Reviews of time* sex* love*Music Review: Album of the Year 2001 Rating: 5 Stars
If those who decide such things give this album a listen and remember the deservedly Grammy-winning "Stones in the Road", "Time, Sex, and Love" is a shoe-in. The songs are rock solid. The ballads are insightful and haunting. The up-tempo tunes, though fewer in number, rock deeper and with more power than what MCC has offered before. The production is more sophisticated and truly rewards an attentive or open-minded listening. "This Is Me Leaving You" reminded me musically and lyrically of the Eagles "Already Gone"I bought this CD a couple of weeks ago, after seeing MCC on the Today show. It hasn't been out of a CD player for more than 8 hours yet!
Music Review: Music for the Soul Rating: 4 Stars
For those of us who have listened to Mary Chapin Carpenter for more than 10 years, this CD will no doubt be listed as one of our favorites. It is the freshest sounding CD she has cut in a while. MCC is one of the best writers of "lonely" and this one doesn't dissapoint. Even though this set of music contains the trademark of her music with the heartfelt words and emotional melodies she uses some new instruments and departs into some fun giggles, which will set you off into your own giggle fest. I have recommened this CD to more than one of my friends and I highly recommend it to anyone else who might be a fan or would like to just listen to some music to fill your soul.
Music Review: Mid-life crisis in a jewel case. Rating: 3 Stars
Time*Sex*Love...evidently MCC doesn't have enough of any of these.I bought this CD because I normally love Mary Chapin Carpenter. I think she's an exceptionally talented songwriter who is blessed with an incredible voice to back it up. I gave the CD 3 stars simply because the music, although disappointing in it's lyrical content was nonetheless breathtaking at points in it's beauty. But what I got was a collection of thirtysomething, upper middle-class angst. If I want to hear about tough choices and hectic lives, I don't need music to take me there...I live it. There's nothing wrong with music that has a melancholy mood, but this whole cd is just depressing.
Music Review: Melodic Treat! Rating: 5 Stars
For years Mary Chapin Carpenter has been labeled a C&W artist and for a while country music embraced her, and it's a good thing they did for if not she would still probably be doing nightly gigs at The Torpedo Factory in Alexandria and no one except those fortunate few would get to hear her. Now that she's established she can do what what she wants and if this is it, I couldn't be more pleased.
This is a beautiful album full of memorable melodies and emotionally passionate lyrics. She has always written with passion and truth and is in my opinion one of the finest songwriters ever. C&W she is not and fans of Shawn Colvin and Ali DiFranco should check this out.
Music Review: A smile, a laugh, a tear Rating: 5 Stars
A new studio release from MCC is always a cause for celebration, and I'm celebrating! Her wit, intelligence, and insight shine through every tune, and if this recording is a little more somber and laid-back than previous releases, it's full of enough surprises to satisfy any fan. Unusual combinations of instruments and her always provocative lyrics make every number a joy to listen to over and over again. There is no other performer like MCC, and her work just seems to keep getting better and deeper. Especially pleasing is the studio blooper (I LOVE her laugh!)and a warm, lovely bonus track. If you haven't already bought this recording-- well, WHY NOT?
