Music Review: A Reason to Love Music Again
Rating: 5 Stars

When I think about Maroon5...the first word that comes to mind is just...WOW! Ok, so not very literate or verbal for a teacher, but these guys have formed the best band I have ever heard or seen in my life. I fell in love with their first single, "Harder to Breathe", which was followed by "This Love" another terrific song. So, on a lark, and a gift certificate, I bought the cd 4 months ago, thinking I would only listen to the two songs I liked (since that's what I always do when I buy cds)! Well, two weeks later, on a long trip I decided to finally listen to the entire cd...since then, it has not left my cd player. So again, wow!
I don't know what else I can say about these guys that hasn't been said before. Originally Kara's Flowers...they grew up, added James Valentine, found a new sound...and Maroon5 was born. They have uniquely combined rock with jazz, soul, pop, and R&B. They are like nothing I had ever heard before or since. They are excellent at their craft...Adam Levine (lead vocals/guitar), James Valentine (guitar), Jesse Carmichael (vocals/keyboards/guitar), Mickey Madden (bass), and Ryan Dusick (vocals/drums)...all of them simply too phenomenal for words! But beyond that, these are just really great guys who love what they do and love their fans. You can't get much better than that.
As far as the album goes...I love every song (and that's saying alot...because I never like every song that a band does). Best ones in my opinion though:
Secret: it just doesn't get much better than this
Tangled: great, great rock song
Shiver: best song performed live
She Will Be Loved: a great ballad and the next single
The Sun: jazziest song on the album
All of these songs are great...but, you haven't truly experienced the magic of Maroon5 until you see them live! DO IT!

Music Review: Well Timed And Appreciated (4 Stars)

I've owned this CD since last year, but I just recently got around to listening to it. I'm a member of BMG and they will send you the selection of the month if you don't tell them that you don't want it. Well I was late returning my form and they sent me this CD. Since I had already heard "This Love" a billion times on pop radio, I dismissed them as Jamiroquai ripoffs and I let it sit for months and had every intention of trading it in at my local music outlet just for some extra store credit. And then, it happened.......one day I said to myself "what the hell" and I gave it a spin. That was back in February and I've been listening ever since. Though this isn't exactly groundbreaking stuff, it's funky and refreshing. Tracks like "The Sun" and "Sunday Morning" are sleeper hits that take this album from good to great. "This Love" and "Shiver" are pretty good and are worthy of radio airplay. Then there are tracks like "Harder To Breathe" and "Through With You" to satisfy the rocker in you. The singles are good, but the rest of the album is better. There really aren't many negative things to say about the CD. I thought the album could've been longer (46 minutes), but it's a worthwhile 46 minutes when compared to the pop crap that's flooding the airwaves. This album walks the fine lines of rock, R&B, and funk without missing a single step. CDs like this don't have to be groundbreaking all of the time. Sometimes they just need to be refreshing and well timed. This CD accomplishes all of that and then some. I won't say it's the best CD ever or that it's the album of the year like these other reviewers, but it's definitely a great listen and it was definitely worth my money.

Standout Tracks: She Will Be Loved, The Sun, Sunday Morning (My Favorite), This Love, Through With You, Secret, and Harder To Breathe

Music Review: Awesome

'Songs About Jane' is one of he best CD purchases I've made in awhile. Even after hearing the first two amazing singles from Maroon 5 ('Harder to Breathe' and 'This Love'), I was slightly reluctant to buy the album. It seems quite rare today to find a CD in which the filler tracks are just as good as, or even better than, the singles. Thankfully, I was not disappointed at all. In fact, it seems as though 'Songs About Jane' has found a permanent place in my CD changer (as opposed to an album that's great upon first listen, but gets thrown to the bottom of the pile soon afterwards).

Although every track is very funky and very fresh, each is still very unique and they all have different strong points. Although I am very aware of the fact that 'She Will Be Loved' is very corny, it has quickly become one of my favorite tracks. Call me crazy, but I'm always struck by high school lyrics ("I don't mind spending everyday/Out on your corner in the pouring rain..."), sad vocals, and music that sounds as though it's been influenced heavily by rain. 'The Sun', 'Must Get Out', 'Sunday Morning' (which I clearly remember hearing in the film 'Something's Gotta Give'), 'Through With You', and 'Not Coming Home' are also my favorites off of the album. 'Secret' is also a great track, and I absolutely love it's lyrics. They're very simple, but they're sang with such strength and expression, that they really strike me. These lyrics could possibly be my favorite lines from the entire album...

"I know I don't know you
But I want you, so bad
Everyone has a secret
Can they keep it?
Oh, no they can't."

On the whole, I would definitely recommend this album to anyone who loves the singles (as most of my friends are already aware). Believe me, chances are, you won't be disappointed.

Music Review: A must-listen for anybody.
Rating: 5 Stars

I must admit, when I first heard the "Harder To Breathe" single on the radio, I thought this group was another alternative "screaming into the microphone" group. I'm 18 years old, and do like music that actually has a beat to it.
What possessed me to buy this album? Not necessarily the hype (if there was any, I was oblivious to it) I wanted to try something new. As some people "try something new" by going to a Sushi Bar, I went to the closest entertainment store and picked up this CD for a mere $10. I didn't think anything of it. Sure, a cheap CD, why not? I should've taken notice that the cashier told me that the copy I purchased was the last remaining one in the store.
Now, I'm like most folks that just buy a CD for one song and never listen to the rest of it, however, as I said before, I didn't buy this CD for the "hit single" In some ways, "Harder To Breathe" irritated me.
This is one of those cases where I just shrugged my shoulders and took the plunge. If this CD was $100 or 1 penny it would still be a good buy. Since I bought this CD less than 24 hours ago it's been going on repeat the entire time. I strongly suggest anybody pick up this album because unlike other bands that repeat the same style over and over again and have tiresome beats or rhythms on every track, Maroon 5 can definitely stretch. Don't let the almost gothic-like cover discourage you. It's like seeing a shadow in an alley that's huge and hearing strange noises, only to find out it's a kitten. True, Maroon 5 isn't THIS innocent, but believe me, these songs are distinguished and catchy. Well, the initial point I'm getting at is this album is for anyone much like Monopoly. It doesn't matter, this album is just plain good music.

Music Review: Exceptional Debut CD!
Rating: 4 Stars

First off, let me say that I'm really surprised at the number and tone of some of the negative reviews of this CD. One reviewer referred to it as "radio pap". To casually lump tracks like "Harder to Breathe" and "This Love" with the synthetic, derivative teeny bopper crap coming from the likes Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Usher, et.al., suggests a high degree of ignorance and not much of a discerning ear. This 48 year old considers "Songs About Jane" to be one of the best CDs to hit the music scene in the last few years. The guys in Maroon 5, particularly Adam Levine, have hit upon a mixture of rock, funk, and soul that might seem derivative or formulaic in theory but that in practice produces some of the most unique and listenable songs I've heard on commercial FM radio in ages.

The only weak track on this CD, in my humble opinion, is "Shiver", which sounds kinda "boy-bandish". I keep wondering when Justin Timberlake's going to record a cover version. Best tracks: "Harder to Breathe" and my personal favorite, "Sunday Morning". Adam Levine's vocals bring to mind Stevie Wonder. Another song of note is "Not Coming Home", which features some interesting guitar work from fellow Nebraskan James Valentine. The guitar line sounds like it was lifted from a 70s porno film soundtrack. I think it's pretty cool. "She Will Be Loved", currently getting airplay on commercial radio, has a smoothness and ambience to it I haven't heard since I was in high school in the 70s. Again, Levine's vocals are superb.

Bottom line here...ignore the negative reviewers but don't take my word for it on "Songs About Jane". If what I and others have written about the band and the CD intrigues you, give it a listen. I'll bet you end up buying it.
