Music Review: spectacular

Mario has an excellent voice and the choice of songs was exceptional. Mario was probably raised in a bilingual environment or else he is just very good with pronunciation. Now, if you are a native speaker of either Spanish, Italian, or Greek, you can sing in any of those 3 languages without the slightest trace of a foreign accent. Growing up in an English speaking environment (which I suspect he may have) also helps since standard Greek and Spanish do not have the soft "g" sound (English and Italian do). Likewise, standard Greek does not contain the "ch" as in "chain" sound. He does not even need to know what a single word in Spanish or Italian means to sound like a native speaker when singing or reading since Mainland Greek, Castilian Spanish, and Northern Italian are all PHONETICALLY IDENTICAL TO EACH OTHER. As a native speaker of Greek and English, I know this. I was even once asked by a Latin cab driver if I was a Spaniard. Had I spoken long enough I would have slipped up somewhere (in my grammar or vocabulary) and he would have known I wasn't. But from what little I did say, in my perfect Castilian accent (a result of my proficiency in Greek), he was led to think I might be from Spain. Thus, a native speaker of Greek with good vocal ability who has NEVER studied Spanish or Italian will probably be better able to sing in Spanish or Italian better than an Anglophone who has studied those 2 languages extensively in high school and/or college. One's grammatical ability and vocabulary mean absolutely nothing when singing. It's one's accent that matters. Mario sings all the songs perfectly. Unless you are a native speaker of either Greek, Spanish, or Italian you will never really undersand why. You see, in all 3 languages the vowels are open, not at all rounded like in English and the r's are rolled. I have heard many pathetic attempts by Anglos trying to replicate the sounds of a southern European languages. This is why Mario stands out. He doesn't just know how to sing. He actually knows how to correctly pronounce all the words in all the languages in which he sings. The sounds one produces when singing are just as important as the notes one is able to reach. Likewise, I have heard many extremely pathetic attempts by Southern European singers attempting to sing in English, French, or German (languages which have an extremely large and complicated set of phonemes). In English, for example, the "ahs" (as in "father") are less open, the "ows" (as in "know") and "yous" (as in "blue")are much more rounded (especially in British English) and there are many, many other vowel sounds like "cat", "ship", "cup", and "bush" which do not even come close to existing in Spanish, Italian, or Greek. Also the "r" varies dramatically from English (soft with tongue backwards) to French-German (guttutal), to Spanish-Italian-Greek (rolled with tip of tongue between teeth). About 0.0000001% of the world's population is able to pronounce ALL THREE correctly. I happen to be one of them. (The English and Sp-It-Gk "r" I grew up with - the French "r" took a lot of practice). It takes an act of God to be able to sing in ALL of the above languages (Eng, Fr, Ger, It, Sp, and Gk) without any foreign accent (only Nana Mouskouri does this as far as I know and even she occasionally mispronounces a word here and there - mostly through common error than not actually being able to reproduce a particular sound). If it turns out that Mario can sing just as well in French and German as he does in English, Greek, Spanish, and Italian then he is truly a miracle.

My favourite song is "Luna Rossa" in which Mario FLAWLESSLY sings a very beutiful, Napolitan song, in perfect Napolitan dialect (which differs greatly from standard Italian). Most Anglo singers would not even attempt this song and even if they did they would just make fools of themselves.

I guess what I'm trying to say is this: Mario sings just as well as Luciano Pavarotti in Italian (yet Pavarotti, although spectacular in Italian, cannot sing in English to save his life). Mario sings just as well as Placido Domingo in Spanish (yet Domingo, while spectacular in Spanish can't sing in English to save his life either). Julio Iglesias does a spectacular job with Spanish, Portugese, and Italian songs, but there should be a law against him singing in English, French, or German (which he does but not very well to say the least). Mario's singing English is on a par with Russell Watson or Sarah Brightman (both of whose English is divine) but neither Russell nor Sarah can match him in Spanish or Italian (well, maybe Russell can match him in Italian but his Spanish and French leaves something to be desired, as does Sarah's). They all have extremely beautiful voices though. I still buy their CD's.

IN A NUTSHELL: Mario is able to WONDERFULLY interpret both English AND Mediterranean songs - a rare quality.

Forget the age of battling boy bands, the era of dueling young tenors is upon us. Hot on the heels of Josh Groban's dizzyingly successful, Ally McBeal-fueled debut comes this first international release from African-born, Greek-raised tenor Mario Frangoulis. There are some clear parallels between Groban's debut and this Frangoulis release, but some distinctive differences as well. While Groban coated his slick, David Foster-molded pop sense with a veneer of classical respectability, Frangoulis has effectively turned the formula inside out. With similar classical training--but a few crucial years of experience on his American rival--Frangoulis treats the classics reverently but not slavishly, with the title track effectively turning an aria from Puccini's Tosca into romantic Europop. Elsewhere, the international flavor is further expanded by three melody-rich songs ("Hijo de la Luna," "La Luna de Valencia," and "Naturaleza Muerta") by Spanish singer-songwriter Jose Maria Cano and a sing-along-ready take on the 1950s Neapolitan chestnut "Luna Rossa."

Like Groban, Frangoulis and producer Steve Woods also plumb the music of la cinema italiana for inspiration, turning Nicola Piovani's bittersweet Life Is Beautiful theme into the ponderous "Buongiorno Principessa," but faring better with a moody, dramatic take on Rota-Wertmuller's "Canzone Arribiata." The obligatory rock-pop cover here is the flamenco-inflected "Nights in White Satin", with Frangoulis joined in a bilingual duet with original Moody Blue Justin Hayward that's surprisingly effective. Less showy perhaps than Groban's debut, but a more nuanced and emotionally satisfying album overall. --Jerry McCulley
