Music Review: Marie fans rejoice !!!

Anyone who grew up a fan of Marie Osmond has been waiting forever for THIS IS THE WAY THAT I FEEL to be released on cd. This was teen Marie, the sweetheart of America, in her musical glory. She had had her first single years before with the huge success of PAPER ROSES and as the Osmond family tended to do they went way overboard pushing her as country and only country. To release the album with the single PAPER ROSES and have other covers made perfect sense but to continue with two more albums where the selling power got less and less with each one was overkill. It was apparent that Marie was gifted with a beautiful, emotive voice but she was only 14 and 15 when many of these tracks were recorded and she was just too young to be emotionally carrying these adult tracks.
The combination of Donny and Marie proved to be pure genius and their vocals melted together and their recordings also allowed Marie to be what she was - a teenager. But they went ahead and issued the third country album WHO'S SORRY NOW? This release with the white frilly dress on the cover contradicted the teen they were displaying on the tv show. It did not sell well at all. Even after saying all this, no true Marie collection would be complete without having all these early country albums. Many are upset that THIS IS THE WAY THAT I FEEL was not released by itself. But WHO'S SORRY NOW was her third release and the 2 for 1 combo is a great deal and also a great way to get an artists entire career at a good price.
Personally, I find WHO'S SORRY NOW a great intro here. She had just turned 16 when she recorded these 10 tracks and again, as we know, the girl can sing. Yes, some of the covers were not good song choices but there are some standouts. Really give the tracks a listen and with tracks like THIS I PROMISE YOU, THINGS I TELL MY PILLOW and THE LITTLE THINGS you can hear pure Marie and definite signs of the true artist she would become.
But with track 11 everything shifts and Marie becomes contemporary and shifts into the 17 year old she was at the time and provides 10 tracks that were finally age appropriate and a definite showcase for her vocal skills. The light disco of the title track is mesmerizing as her vocals soar. Standouts are DIDN'T I LOVE YOU BOY, MISS YOU NIGHTS, YOU'RE MY SUPERMAN and RUN TO ME. This album should have definitely been promoted more. The public knew her from her three previous country albums, Paper Roses and the country half of Donny and Marie. This album coulds have been a much grander success if handled properly and showcased her as contemorary or even pop country.
For me, I grew up with Marie, have always loved her and cherished this album when it came out. To have it on cd remastered so perfectly is an amazing gift. It is in no way dated and you can definetely see why Marie has endured so long. I highly recommend this cd for Marie fans as well as those who are curious. You will get a big surprise from a great talent.
